They still make FJR's so most folks are probably selling the old to buy new. Unlike Rebels, you can still buy a new FJR.

Hmm, let's see. Lighter than a C-14, better mileage, more adjustable suspension, great price and it fits a niche use that I have. Oh yeah I compared it to the '09 the Kawi dealer was offering. The FJR is an '04

I would say moving up to a newer model, I know several who have done so. It all comes down to FJR bang for the buck.....every time I get a twinge to get something else......in the end all of the FJR capabilities overshadow most bikes. Long range tank-reliable-26K valve check-shaft-luggage, and of course lots of USEABLE HP that will still blow most bikes away. The FJR gets the job done, without wondering if your Kipass is going to leave you stranded 500 miles from home. I plan on running mine a long time......had cruise installed a couple years ago, the one thing all sport tour machines should come standard with......so mine is set. I've already been through the Wings, and V twins, and even my beloved Valkyrie with no range was a much less efficient traveler than the FJR.........if I do sell mine it will be to get a 2007 with that swell burgundy color......

Actually I've got a good answer for County. The reason so many are for sale all the time is that Yamaha sold the ever lovin crap out of them, it's a numbers thing. That would also explain the rarity of Blackbirds for sale.

If it were under water all the time, things like hermit crabs would probably live in it. I heard this in another thread. Then papa started talking about spanking his monkey while wearing a suit. This place is great. Fucking monkey cunts in suits!!!! Woot!!!!!!!

Start a poll if ya really want to know.
I had an '05 FJR for a little while. Nice bike. A bit heavy. I sold it because I already had a C10 in the garage and there really wasn't anthing the FJR could do the C10 couldn't. (Yes the FJR is a bit smoother and obviously has more power, but for the bikes purpose the C10 was actually the better tool for the job (cold weather riding, nasty muddy gravel roads, occasional creek crossings, etc.)
With the money I got from selling the FJR I added a DRZ-400 and a first Gen Fz1 to the stable.

I prefer my ST11 to the FJR so I'm not really that much of a fan, but I will say I'd sure buy one over a Blackbird torture rack or Rebel. Or an FZ1, or DRZ400, or C10, or any combination of these bikes.

I've got an '09 FJR and I've been looking at VFR800's recently, even wondering what a new CBR1000rr with Heli bars would be like for 200-300 miles. I've got the new bike-itis bad, but I'm having trouble finding something to replace the FJR with. Maybe I'll get an R1 and keep the FJR? See if there is a new FZ1 for 2011? I don't know. The grass is always greener on the other side. I think I want something smaller/lighter, but maybe I buy that and wish I had the comfort of the FJR again. Being able to shift from full tuck, to sit up and beg, to full upright, with adjustable windscreen, bags, and 150WHP on tap with no chain maintenance is pretty cool. I just wish it was 100 pounds lighter.

mostly its because the market demographic that can afford to buy one in the first place can also afford to switch motorcycles whenever they feel like it...... because they can.
They are not locked into one fine motorcycle like the FJR like many owners of lower cost bikes are.
And shoot, not everyone wants to own a generic, souless bike like a Honda.
I still grin every time I fire up my '05 FJR..

I have toyed with the notion of selling my 2005, But it does everything so well its hard to let her go. I just got back from 11 days on the road, 17 states, and a SS1000 in route. Rode over 4500 miles on her. I love my FJR. I stopped to check out a new helmet on the way home and the salesman tried to push a connie 14 on me. Not a chance. Too many shortcomings on the Connie 14. I will probally ride my FJR till the wheels fall off her.

Welp,
I love this place. The FJR-dinstas are going to get up-in-arms now! Isn't an FJR like a really big moped? One of those 650 Burgmans? That was my experience. I've driven one.

Mine is for sale... I just have a history of changing bikes every 3 years or so. Nothing wrong with the FJR, just ready to try something else. I'll bet a lot of folks are in the same boat, just ready to try something else.

Yes, we all wish we had one....regrettably there are not enough to go around. That is why I wonder why people are selling them.
Lets see...I had six beemers, managed to put over 50k on several of them. Got rid of all of them finally. Then I got rid of my old FJR because it was time for it's 78,000 valve check and I was too lazy to do it, after all, have to do them every 26,000 miles! Oh, also got rid of it because it had a clutch lever....my new AE is everything the '04 was not and more.
So go ahead, ask me why I dumped...er....sold my beemers.

I was over on the
dark side
fjrforum last night. It seems like the FJR owners are selling them like hotcakes after they test ride the new BMW K1600GTL. Then they all plunk down money on the K1600GT becasue the GTL is too damn expensive. It seems like most of the posts over there are for new FJR owners or old owners doing nothing but bitchin bout their present crappy FJRs, spider ground, weight, and heat problems. The ticking of the first gen bikes was taken care of by the factory already and if it wasn't done it was because the original owners didn't give a chit. I would buy one of the engine acted like my old FZR1000's engine. Pulled like a freight train from 5000 rpm up. Of course that was a chain driven bike.

I would love to buy one today. I have a few hurdles to overcome first.
1. The two dealers close by don't have any in stock for me to take for a test ride.
2. I have a bike payemnt on my BMW for $435 right now.
3. My bank won't give me a loan for one bike let alone two when 95% of my unemployment checks are going to paying my bills.
So even if I could sell my BMW to buy a FJR my bank says no. I tried to explain to them that a new FJR is only $15000 something and that equates to less than $300 a month. So it would actually be easier for me to pay all my bills with a newer bike in the garage. They weren't buying.
Stupid bankers!
So I am stuck with my slow comfortable do everything well boxer and no cash for gas money. I guess I will have to suffer until I can find a job. It wouldn't be so bad but I was already told they wouldn't refinance my bike loan because they don't do that. I have been on unemployment since February no and it really sucks! Too few jobs and too many applications is what I am hearing. Thank you Mr President for totally f'ing up our economy and making it look like it was anybody's fault but your own.

That 1600GTL thing sounded tempting, until I see Cycle World's long term tester was eating sets of tires every 5K miles? Holy crap that would get expensive...

I only counted a couple guys. Overall, the FJR is at the very limit of a good ST bike weight-wise. Adding another 50lbs and $10,000 for less reliability (potentilly) doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

County, it's economics 101.
Yamaha sold a ton of FJR's from 2004 through 2010. A very popular model, and top seller for them. Therefore as rider demographics change, bikes get older, and newer bikes enter the market older FJR's are going to be sold off as used bikes. Currently you can get a used 2008-2009 Second Gen. FJR for around $8,000. A smoking deal for a used but competent sport-touring bike.
Of course one could always go and spend north of $20,000 for a new BMW 1600, but why?
Me, I am enjoying my Honda Blackbird, and CRF250X. I do miss my FJR, especially in the cool (cold) weather we are having now. But the Blackbird is a nice stop gap bike until I get another FJR.
Wishing you all the best.
FYI. I credit the FJR being well built help me survive a terrible crash with a deer last September.

Nice frame protectors!
Those would have helped some, but the main issue was the head on impact with the deer at 55 MPH.
My point being that since the FJR is so well engineered, the bike withstood the impact well while protecting me. I ended up walking away from the crash with minor injuries.

I frequent a few FJR Forums.
Many of the riders there sell their older FJR's and buy newer ones OR they own 2, 3, or MORE of them!!
They LOVE the FJR and I have to say after owning one for only 2 months I see why!!

I'll tell you exactly why. On paper they are probably the most appealing ST bike out there, they are also great looking bikes that come in a lot of colors that really set them off. Then owners get a chance to put some miles on and it doesn't quite turn out as planned. Some of them vibrate a LOT if the throttle plates aren't synced (FJRforum for info) and not having 6th gear makes those bikes actually seem not so great at 70mph. FJR's excel in a lot of areas, but those areas only appeal to a certain crowd of hard-core touring riders. The stock tires and rear shock is also a joke that doesn't help initial <3000mile ride impressions. I also see lots of low mile AE's that get traded in a dealers, which also seems like an appealing feature to some, but perhaps doesn't turn out like they hoped, given the control you give up at parking lot speeds, especially if the auto-clutch is out of adjustment. Many could also argue they aren't exactly "exciting", especially if they've owned lighter and more powerful machines.
Mine will see 100K if the auto-clutch doesn't strand me. I did have to mess with it for almost a year to get it to my liking though, but that goes for any touring bike I've bought. Unless you plan on putting on some serious miles in complete comfort and want the ability to keep up with sportbikes in the canyons, there are better choices out there.

Sorry bro - you're smoking crack if you think an FJR can keep up with a sport bike in the canyons.

Fair enough, but at real world canyon speeds, a good FJR rider will keep a sportbike in sight. Their corner speeds might differ but that extra torque helps offset that. I was just making the point that FJR's feel more like bike sportbikes than some of the larger and heavier ST bikes.

It's all good, I'm just busting your chops
I just recall the first time I hit the canyons on the FJR and hit a few corners closer to the speeds I'd take them at on the Busa. I'm not used to dragging pegs all the way through corners lol. It does pretty well for what it is though.

A Penske or Ohlins will fix that problem right up.

Yeah - it would help. Or, I could use the Busa for sport riding, leave the FJR as is and save a grand lol

If I had another bike like a Busa I'd still consider it. I've never, ever had a bike respond so well to not just the shock, but the correct spring. FJR has a lot of weight to bog down than rear end, keep it up where it belongs worked wonders for mine.

not having 6th gear.
Many could also argue they aren't exactly "exciting",
that would be most of my issues except i would say that it was lacking soul, but the bike was exciting.
the final straw was the Boss not happy riding it... wind was terrible for her no matter what position the screen was in. she liked the Busa better.. go figure....

The 6th gear thing drove me crazy until I rode my beloved XX again, right before I sold it. At 70 mph they were both within 100rpm or so. Haven't given it much thought since.
Stock, mine was a
buzzy
bastard and I wanted to sell it. Syncing the throttle plates made it smoother than my XX below 60mph and as smooth above 60mph, best thing I ever did to a bike.

That doesn't really bother me *that* much - other than the fact that I'm looking for 6th all the time. It would be nice though, since the bike has plenty of oomph for another gear, and would be nice to have the rpm's lower at 85-90.

The only other reason it doesn't bother me is that magnificent gear indicator nice and big on the dash. Makes all the difference, although on the highway, sometimes I'll still click the lever to make extra super-duper sure there's no a 6th gear

I guess they added the gear indicator later. Mine's a 2004 lol.
