We left Austin Tx. on July 13th for the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, the 16 hour drive via Texas Panhandle was very nice, because the scenery is quite good, and the roads are not populated with semi-trucks (unlike using Interstate 10). After 16 hours, we pulled into the Great Sand Dunes!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070065.jpg

Locked and Loaded and ready to tackle the Medano Pass Road... or so I thought!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070067.jpg

The road starts out pretty easy, and this was my wife's first big ride on the DRZ...
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070069.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070070.jpg

The road quickly turns to deep sand, hmmmm.... I guess that's what you get when riding at the base of a sand dune!
I took the DRZ to scout out how long the sand lasted before climbing Medano Pass
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070072.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070075.jpg

The deep sand looked to continue for a few miles, so I turned the DRZ around and we headed back, to get more information about the road.
I was concerned that a long stretch of deep sand would do Sarah in before we even got to Medano Pass.
We had already picked up the DRZ several times and the level of exertion at 10,000 ft was being felt!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070082.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_14_P1070087.jpg

After struggling in the sand we found out that:
"The Medano Pass Road is closed beyond the Castle Creek Picnic Area (3 miles from start of the road near the park campground) due to the Medano Fire."
Even though I was disappointed that we missed out on Medano Pass, it was a blessing in disguise, because we really needed to spend the day acclimating to the high elevation. We loaded the bikes and spent the night at the Dunes.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_15_P1070093.jpg

I don't get it... she is smiling and making me breakfast after letting me talk her into riding a motorcycle in the dirt!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_15_P1070096.jpg

After our pancakes, we re-evaluated what to do for the day. Since Medano Pass was not to be, we left the Dunes for one of my
back-up camping locations - O'Havre Lake. The lake is it located at the base of Marshall Pass, loaded with trout and warm enough to
swim in!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_15_P1070135.jpg

We headed for Marshall Pass.

After relaxing at the summit, we took the Poncha Creek Jeep Trail. This was the first test of Sarah's skills in rocky and steep trail conditions.
Luckily her previous mountain biking experience came into play here, and all was well!

A hairy beast was spotted in the lake... we think he ate a Buell rider.

After winning the wet t-shirt contest, I took off for a little session on the DRZ up the Jeep trail!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_15_P1070128.jpg

Needless to say, it was a fabulous day of riding and swimming!... more to come...
Cheers!

So, after noodling around Marshall Pass and having a great breakfast at the campsite, we headed towards Canon City to ride the Gold Belt.

The drive to the suspension bridge was really tight and twisty, and the bridge is amazing.

After calming down about the bridge scam, we set up camp at Mueller State Park, which was a clean and tidy place.
We slept under the stars.... no tent! That was really cool!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_16_P1070162.jpg

Sarah brought a fine red wine to have with our camp dinner.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_16_P1070161.jpg

The following morning we set off to ride the Gold Belt Tour
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_05/goldbelt.jpg

The Shelf Road and Phantom Canyon Road of the Gold Belt Tour, are truly a perfect dual sport ride!
The paved bits that connect you to the two dirt roads are superb and the geography is unlike anything else in Colorado.

Thanks DogBoy!

After riding the Gold Belt, we headed to Lake City Colorado via the Gunnison National Forest.
Using GPS in the truck we honed in on a fabulous $5 camp spot.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_18_P1070248.jpg

These creatures came bounding across our site and up the mountain.

We spent two nights at the Alpine Moose Lodge in Lake City. The Moose Lodge is owned and operated by a French couple who also run their French restaurant at the lodge. Ever since enjoying Chef Bruno's fine cuisine a year ago on the TAT Adventure, I have wanted to take my wife there. My wife is also a Chef, and truly appreciated Bruno's cooking and company!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_19_P1070354.jpg

Bruno's Gravlax were heavenly... we ordered them each day!

Chef Bruno, is from Southern France, where my brother and I are from:
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/chef_bruno.jpg

Bruno's Goat Cheese, Red Pepper and Bison Meat pizza was mind boggling.
We also had Mushroom Ravioli and Duck Breast, and Triple Chocolate Mouse Cake.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_19_P1070359.jpg

Our first day in Lake City was spent riding Pinon Pass, which is peppered with excellent camping areas that I would like to spend more time in next time we go to Colorado.

The beauty of Colorado, as far as Dual Sport riding goes, is that the paved roads are as beautiful and fun to ride as the dirt roads.
Dual Sport bikes actually handle really well, and can be flicked through the hairpins!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_18_P1070286.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_18_P1070287.jpg

Our second day in Lake City was spent in the American Basin, which is on the road to Cinnamon Pass, just before you do the steep climb up to the summit.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm178/ninaudp/2010_07_colorado_vacation/2010_07_19_P1070294.jpg

Sarah continued to build her Dual Sport riding skills by traversing a gnarly water crossing and passing some ATVs on a rocky uphill.

After the American Basin, I rode the DRZ up to Engineer Pass. A rain storm was forming, so I cut loose on the DRZ.
It handled great, and the new tires were hooking up nice! I bombed up and down the pass at a good clip.
My thighs were burning, arms pumped and adrenaline flowing!
