In contrast, if I leave from Kennewick, I am looking at Lolo Pass, Chief Joseph battlefield, Virginia City, Yellowstone Park, and Cody before I hit the 90 mile freeway stretch at Buffalo.  Obviously,  everyone's situation is different but I would prefer to do WCRM the previous week, go home, and then ride to Custer.

My vote is WCRM on June 3-4, and any location works for those dates.  Hopefully, it will not be snowing (again) on 36 at that time of year.

What are you going to do on the way back?

And I didn't start a poll...so I'm not sure why you are casting a vote.

If getting away from the coast is the issue, how about the Shasta area - good roads nearby and away from coastal fog. Nearer to Dakota too.

Um...do you know where Chester is?

When we had our .5 meet there years ago...it was epic!  EPIC!

That actually would allow a week plus to visit my favorite Nevada, Utah, and Colorado areas on the way to the Nat'l.

Hmm,  Pacific Coast to California, WCRM, Tahoe, Utah 12, Colorado. Hail

That would be hard to get both those times off without taking the full 2 weeks off which I really don't want to do.

Sorry, my bad, I had this crazy idea that like previous years, the purpose of this thread was to discuss WCRM VIII dates and  location.  I didn't (fully) realize that your intention is to have an WCRM built totally around your vacation schedule and when and where you want to ride.

Past years the poll did not work.  It just created confusion until about a month before the meet.

This method...it is designed to not create confusion and to allow people who need o submit for vacation to be able to do this as early as possible increasing their odds of coming.

The only reason that previous polls didn't work very well was because there were always some busy bodies who didn't have any intention of attending but thought it was great fun to stuff the ballot box.

I have already stated my preference not to have WCRM in Chester the weekend before the National but I have been to every WCRM since I joined STN and would like to continue that tradition if I could figure out how to make a decent ride to Custer in 3 days...so enlighten me...what fun route are you planning to take from Chester to Custer?

Maybe this one?

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Chester,+CA&daddr=OR-140+W%2FWarner+Hwy+to:Whitehorse+Rd+to:US-20+W%2FUS-26+W%2FUS-93+S+to:US-16+W+to:Custer,+SD&hl=en&geocode=FWIGZwId2iXG-CkPuT3yF2qdgDEcXDtsqXH_rQ%3BFaJMggIdIJbd-A%3BFXsChwIdJLz1-A%3BFTo9lQId1ic2-Q%3BFcT7oQIdKoeb-Q%3BFXvTmwIdKjXT-SlRbWIuf8xihzGATnq383u3wA&mra=ps&sll=43.909766,-106.034546&sspn=3.063044,7.113647&ie=UTF8&z=6

~1400 miles.  That's ~466 miles a day.  Longer but not horrible.

Lets see, Chester to Custer via San Diego, 2,562 miles in less than 3 days (remember, the third day has to be completed by 5-6 pm or we miss the Tuesday night dinner)..........yea, you are looking at a couple of pretty long (fun) days on that route.   Headscratch

I was joking.  I actually was wondering what if the meet was the weekend you want and I took two weeks off and went for a ride.  How would I do it.  FYI That piece from Chester to San Diego would not be what is on that map.   Bigsmile

That's much better but you will not be stopping to enjoy the view or taking many pictures between Chester and Idaho Falls.

If I were leaving from Kennewick I would go Highway 12 over Lolo Pass, South on 93, east on 43 past the Big Hole Battlefield, and then go through Virginia City on the way to Yellowstone.......

OK...you got me on that one.  If I had 10 days to get from Chester to Custer I would take the shortest route to Zion, Bryce Canyon, take Highway 12 to Capital Reef, and do Moab.   I would then go to Cortez, Silverton, Ouray, and a couple of the high mountain roads in Colorado on the way to Custer.

But, if you want to save vacation time, just go back home on Sunday and leave for Custer the following Saturday.
