If I were leaving from Kennewick I would go Highway 12 over Lolo Pass, South on 93, east on 43 past the Big Hole Battlefield, and then go through Virginia City on the way to Yellowstone.......

Are you planning on doing the same route home?

No, but there are not that many options in Wyoming so its kind of hard not to backtrack...and weather is always a wild card at that time of year.  I would like to do Beartooth Pass on the way back and also do either (1) the St. Joe Road from St. Regis, MT to St. Maries, ID, (its 16 miles of gravel on the Montana side but easy going uphill) or (2) Salmon, ID to Stanley, Banks, Cambridge, Hells Canyon, and then Enterprise if the road is repaired by then, otherwise Baker City.  There are a lot of different ways to get to St. Regis or Salmon.

OK...you got me on that one.  If I had 10 days to get from Chester to Custer I would take the shortest route to Zion, Bryce Canyon, take Highway 12 to Capital Reef, and do Moab.   I would then go to Cortez, Silverton, Ouray, and a couple of the high mountain roads in Colorado on the way to Custer.

But, if you want to save vacation time, just go back home on Sunday and leave for Custer the following Saturday.

That would be on my short list.

Seems I was in a hurry and left out a couple of details.  Since you asked the question about riders coming from LA or San Diego, I compared the driving distance and time from San Diego to Eureka vs Boise to see how much extra time it would take for our Southern California riders if we changed from our traditional location.

FYI: Date change due to the overwelming push to making it a week earlier.

Sounds like a plan  Thumbsup, but if the date is changed should we also change the location?

Sounds like another plan  Thumbsup Thumbsup  I assume this means that you are recommending the roads to and from Ely  Inlove  Isn't Ely close to Custer?  Maybe we could change the date and do WCRM and the National in one trip.  Lol

Ely sounds like a plan. We could stay at the Hotel Nevada, they even have a motorcyclist discount.  I've stayed there before, just be careful of the showers.

If we go to Ely, NV I'm staying at the La Quinta.  Its less than a year old right now and pretty nice.  In a town of nothing...that's the best.

Would anybody, seriously, ever... stay in towns with names like Ely or Chester?

Of course they wouldn't.

Yeah maybe not.  Perhaps Ukiah would work...I mean it being the week earlier and all if we go to Ukiah we can continue south and bike the thing a giant loop around the western us.   Bigok
