I'm curious.

Why do people like this beater Harley but not the new ones?
I see comments like "he didn't just bolt stuff on but built it himself", "that's a Harley I like" etc.  And yet these comments come from people riding safe, comfortable, generic turnkey bikes with bolt on accessories themselves.

How's that make you any different from a dood riding a new Harley with an FI kit and slip on pipes?

Shouldn't you lot at least be riding beat to hell, leaking, mid 1970s Japanese UJMs?  Otherwise what are you appreciating?  And if you appreciate it so much, get rid of your modern plastic, hit up craigslist and get a $300 basket case and be cool to.

Otherwise, quite frankly, you're all full of crap.

...and for the record, anyone who buys a 800 beemer these days has me as fan.  Those bikes are a great choice...I wish they would have been around when I was contemplating a R1200GS and decided the value wasn't there - but it IS there in the 800!  Not sure I would have ended up with the 'strom at that point (probably not).

I'm more like a .01%er, btw, since I am the only one in this entire country that I know who has purposely purchased a motorcycle for a business that involves on/off road travel - and actually uses it for that purpose (primarily).  

I know I am not the only one who has done this, but I don't know anyone else who personally has done this.

I can appreciate a dude who takes a bunch of parts from a cycle salvage place, builds it up and makes it his own creation.  I have about a billion times more respect for a person like that than someone who goes out and buys a pretty, chromey piece of fancy Harley and takes it in to get serviced on a trailer.

I haven't owned a bike (or almost anything) that I haven't taken apart and put back together + built custom parts for it - even the V-strom is in that category.

I value originality.  It's honest, it's sincere and it's rare in this age of cookie cutter ticky tack marketing fodder.

1. I never said that I would, own, buy, ride or thought the bike in question exhibited any extraordinary engineering talent. Only that I thought it was cool.
2. I never said anybody had to like the bike in question, in fact this whole thing was about me being called a poser because I expressed a positive opinion about the bike.
3. You do not know about anything me and have absolutely no idea what I may or may have not known or done in my life so you can stop telling me how to think.
4. I would have gladly engaged in a conversation but a few posts in I realized I had taken the troll bait and any the chance of meaningful conversation with you had gone out the window.

That's similar to my thoughts.

Foot clutch and hand shifter. There is no earthly reason why that's a good idea.  

Hard tail. There is no earthly reason why that's a good idea. The only people who think they're "cool" are the ones who haven't ridden one. And people think stock new Harleys are bone rattlers.

I think it's cool to wrench and keep something running, but frankly... that thing is just old and beat and hacked back together just because he can, not out of necessity. Doing that stuff from necessity because stuff is out of production for 50 years is cool. That...? Not so much.

Oh, and shouldn't there be more ragging on the pirate for his choice of ape hangers...?

I don't think it's really the picture of "cool" that others think it is.

I personally thinks it's a cool looking rat. I certainly wouldn't trade my '08 Luxo-Glide for it but it would be a fun bike to ride. I built a rigid frame shovelhead chopper when I got out of the Navy, all used parts, hand shift/ foot clutch, not that much different to this actually, and rode the shit out of it for a few years.  Of course I was a skinny long-haired 21 year old then, not the bald middle aged (ahem) well marbled fellow I am now.... Still it was fun at the time and I can appreciate the persona of this bike.

Whatever flips your switch my friend, no reason to get excited.....
