19 Yamaha's in Rally all finished. 0% failure rate.
24 Honda's in Rally 1 DNF. 5% failure rate.
33 BMW's in Rally 5 DNF. 15% failure rate.
3 Kawasaki's in Rally 1 DNF. 33% failure rate.
2 Suzuki in Rally 1 DNF. 50% failure rate.
1 Triumph in Rally it finished. 0% failure rate.
3 Harley's in Rally 3 DNF. 100% failure rate.
The next question is how many of these were mechanical failures vs. uncontrollable incidents (deer strike, heart attack, whatever)?

So..Yamaha's are as reliable a Triumphs! Suzuki's are twice as reliable as Harley's! BMW's are twice as reliable as Kawasaki's! ( ahh, statistics) I know that one of the BMW's withdrew for 'business reasons'. Were any of the DNF's due to not making it to check in during the alotted time?

Yeah not all of them were mechanical failures. There were actually very few mechanical failures overall.

Got my IBA number today (came in an email). I'm now 443.
Now for the bad news. I'm stuck in Utah. My final drive seal blew yesterday for the SECOND time since the rally ended (it also failed in the parking lot at the finish).
The bike was towed 125 miles to Salt Lake City. The dealer is closed until tomorrow, so I have to wait to find out what's going on. I have a bad feeling it's something big. Lots of fluid was coming out when I noticed it.
I'll call a lunch meeting as soon as I get home. If it's gonna be more than a day, I might be flying home and coming back to get the bike later.

Sorry to hear that. How many miles on it? I'll be interested in what the dealer says. Hopefully they can get it done for you soon so you can ride it back. It would be terrible to have to fly back to Utah to ride......right?
Safe travels, and let us know when lunch is, I'm dying to hear the details.

I'm at just over 21K on the bike. Nice eh!?
Some good news. I'm still on the same set of PR3 tires I put on a couple of days before the rally. They're at over 10,000 miles now and the rear looks like NEW! Front is scalloping a bit, but lots of tread left. Everyone should RUN out and buy a set of PR3s immediately. Few of the riders ran them because they're so new and unproven, but all who did were impressed. They're even better in the rain than the PR2s and apparently last longer and wear more evenly.

Dean, hope you make it back soon and without the oil spillage. Sounds like the last dealer didn't do the seal replacement correctly or misdiagnosed the root cause. Lunch sooner or later is cool.

I'm back on the road. Got out of the dealer by mid-afternoon and got about 450 miles in today. Only 1200 to go to my driveway! Looks like two more days to go.
They claim that just the seal failed AGAIN. Apparently, it looks like the last place didn't drain all the fluid out. Too much fluid = overpressure and seal failure. The 2011 BMWs apparently have a vent to help with this, but of course I have a 2010 design.
Let's hope this one lasts longer!
I'll call lunch shortly after I get home and check in.

Damn it. Just as I start to consider a BMW again, another example of something like this. Why can't FJR reliability be found in a less than 600 pound package and with speakers and great alternator?!?! Sigh. I guess life's about compromises and I'll have to give up my dream of a lightweight fully dressed sport-tourer for bulletproof reliability (which is number one priority on my list).
I'd like to take my shot at iron butt rally. I think this summer I'm gonna hit up a BB1000 and then the 1500 another weekend. Give it a shot and see if I would be up for training for a rally. But I'm officially scared off and that rally will not be a beemer. Sigh.

I just save as a web page, and it will save the map image as a gif in the directory where you save it to. Otherwise, if you use Windows Vista or 7, use the snipping tool under "Programs >> Accessories" to capture the image directly from the program.
