I am going to have a few free days in Houston TX the week of Jan 10.  My wife will be in meetings all day and I will be free to explore a bit.  I am thinking on renting a bike (only Harley's in Houston, as far as I can tell).

Anyway, does anyone know of any interesting roads or sights to see within an 8 hour round trip of Houston?

Any experience with the rental outfits down there?

Thanks

Can't help you with the rental thing but you might want to post this up in region 2.

Plenty of areas to explore within 8 hours just depends on what type of scenery you want to check out. If you like piney woods head north up highway 59 and once past Cleveland take almost any side road.

If you like hilly country Get on 290 till you hit Austin - longer ride but well worth it.

If you want to see the coast take I-45 south to Galveston then head west on the Seawall Boulevard till you come to Surfside (40 miles) then head Southwest till you hit Rockport.

If you want to see Indian Country get on I-10 and dont stop till you come to Ft Stockton - but that would be a 24 hour round trip but you would qualify for TX SS1000.

I don't believe there are any dealers other than HD who rent in Houston area.

lots of good riding NW of Houston on rolling back roads through forrest and farm ground.

I will post up some routes in the next week or so, so stay tuned.

Thanks - I'll look forward to them.  It looks like the riding weather will be fairly good that time of year (compared to what I see out of my window in Edmonton).

Its a wetter cold down here due to be so close to gulf so you will still need some cold weather gear. I usually ride with T-shirt, then long sleeved henley then textile with quilted liner, good insulated gloves with wind/waterproof covers.  Thermals under riding jeans and good wool/synthetic socks. Also a balaclava is good idea.

We're desperately short of "twisties" around here but if you end up with an HD that may be OK.  A short breakfast run  would be up I-45 to Willis, take FM 1097 to Montegomery, turn north on 149 thru the Sam Houston Forrest to Anderson.

If you venture further, you can find FM 3090 (the "Tail of the Kitty") off 149 then go up to Carlos via FM 244 where you'll find the Liberty Tavern, an OK place for lunch.  Lots of Pirates and sport bike types there on the weekends.

If you've got a couple of days then the Hill Country should be on your list.

How long do you have?
