It was Friday night and I wanted to do set out on a random adventure but I only had two days to get something in. I have family in Knoxville Tennessee so on very short notice, I called up my uncle and said I was coming down.  After a half-ass 15 minute packing/planning session (which I regretted later) I was off to bed (about 11pm) and the alarm woke me up at 3:30am.  I was off.

I had never taken a big trip like this before (which might explain my lack of preparation).

(Yes, I'm probably crying) as you can see it rained a lot, on the way down and back.  Of course I didn't bring rain gear why would I have.  Yes I learned my lesson.

I was impressed with Knoxville, market square reminded me of some of the places I visited while in Spain.  Appeared to be a pedestrian friendly/clean city. Yes, I saw some beautiful women.  I arrived Saturday at roughly 3pm and left Sunday at 3:30am.  I would have loved to stay longer as the weather was great, and returning to icy hell rust belt didn't sound like much fun.

Total distance traveled:  1242 miles
Time it took: 10 hours there and 10 back (approx).  

Things I learned from this experience Headscratch

-rain gear is not overrated
-'gauntlet style' riding gloves are not overrated
-need a taller windshield
-I developed an attachment to my motorcycle from this trip (one of those things you can't explain but you feel)  Is it love? Smile

Although I'll certainly put more planning into future trips, it was really nice to just get up and ride down south on a whim.

Some of the best adventures are the spontaneous kind.  Next time however, I'd try to be less spontaneous and plan to spend some time there.  Lots of good stuff to ride in Tennessee and North Carolina.  Might try one of these myself in a couple of weeks.

Nice work.  It's fun to do that.  One of my favorite things is leaving pre-dawn and riding through the sunrise- you see the world wake up from the seat of your bike.  Great stuff.  

Nothing makes you friends with your bike like riding long.  Nice work.

I do love the feeling of having already done a hundred miles or so before the sun comes up.

My last long trip I did just that, but it was like 32 degrees and I forgot to wear another layer down low.  Anyone else ever had those deep hip shivers?

I love spontaneous bike trips; last one I did was to the UP to visit family and it didn't last nearly long enough (imo).

Kudo's to you for just getting up and going. THAT is what riding bikes is all about. And that fondness that grew between you and your bike? Yup, that's love  Inlove

You'll learn from these spontaneous trips what the essentials are, like rain gear and gauntlet gloves. All comes with time and "damn, I won't do that again" moments.

Trust me, you can prep and plan all you want and still end up cold and drenched at a gas station wondering what the hell you are doing.

Back down in in Tennessee. Rode route 129 into North Carolina; it was the best ride of my life of course. I survived the dragons tail.

Couldn't pass it up!  Paid my respects to the tree of shame as well.
While heading back towards Knoxville I encountered a rider down with a nasty lac on the forehead. While waiting 30+ minutes for the ambulance to arrive the officer on scene lit up a smoke!  Things are certainly different down there, but this Yankee loved the scenery not excluding the southern belles.
