The new 2013 Daytona 675 and Street Triple 675

This is the all-new Triumph Daytona 675 which was spotted by an MCN reader testing on the roads near Triumph's Hinckley factory.

The spy shots, taken on a mobile phone, show a comprehensively overhauled version of the inline three-cylinder 675cc supersport bike with - judging by the angles visible - almost every part new or heavily modified.

The underseat exhaust has been ditched in favour of a tiny side-mounted silencer, the front fairing is all new, the rear seat and lights are completely different, the rear subframe is new and the side fairing is tweaked too.

This is the first major overhaul the Daytona 675 has received since its launch in 2006, when it hit the supersport class like a thunderbolt. Its characterful inline three-cylinder engine, great road manners amd delicate handling sent it right to the top of the supersport class.

This overhaul is right on time for Triumph, as sales of the current bike have slowed in recent months. According to one dealer, who didn't want to be named, the factory has no new 2011 stock to buy; all you can buy are the bikes already in dealers.

Andy Downes from MCN said they were 99% sure it was the 675 engine (see his comments over here).  The engine head in the photos looks like a 675.

The all-new, completely overhauled Triumph Daytona 675 has been spotted by MCN reader Bash Bailey, who filmed the bike undergoing testing on the roads near Triumph's Hinckley factory.

The revamped 675 will be seen in finished form at the end of 2012 before going on sale in 2013. The bike features an all-new fairing; the underseat exhaust has been dumped in favour of a stubby side-mounted version but frame and engine remain essentially the same. The lights, rear seat and subframe are completely different on the comprehensively overhauled bike.

While sales of the 600cc machines have dropped by as much as 75% in some markets, the Triumph Daytona 675 remains a good seller for the British firm, with many putting that down to the more road-oriented nature of the three-cylinder motor's power and torque delivery.

The Daytona 675 received a big upgrade for 2011 and Triumph doesn't update very often (fine with me). This was thin even for MCN.

After 18,500 miles, I'm still loving my 2010 model.  It's my favorite Triumph by far.  Improvements?  Pillion grab handles would be nice.  The only things I've changed to mine are comfort/convenience mods such as new seat, luggage rack, and a center stand.  Some people may think it's a bit antiseptic compared to a twin, but when you put that triple on the boil, it's amazing.

I don't yet see the 2013 changes as improvements.  First they took away the bug eyes, now they've taken away the sweet dual high-mount exhausts.  AND they took off the beautifully sculpted Daytona swingarm and replaced it with the ugly Tiger 800 one.  None of these are improvements to me, but instead look like changes forced upon the Street Triples by the changes made to the Daytona.  Regardless, I'm sure it will still be great fun to ride.

It looks like both 2013 675's will have short n stubby exhausts stock.  Looks a bit like the Honda CB1000R exhaust to me.

I have to agree - prefer the looks of the current model, and most of the changes seem to primarily be cosmetic updates.  I love the performance in stock form after 24k.  I'm going up a tooth on the rear sprocket on my next set, only because there were no stock size ones to be had from the aftermarket.  Should have minimal impact other than being slightly helpful when riding the steep hills of San Francisco 2-up.  My only changes have been comfort/convenience related as well (rear rack, Sargent seat, Tiger hand guards and center stand).

After 24k I feel like my rear shock is starting to fade.  I've started noticing how rough it can be over the past 6 months or so, whereas I didn't before.  I have a Daytona shock that I bought for $100 but I'm not excited about the increase in rear ride height or added stiffness of the spring.  Otherwise it has held up really well.  

Two things I wish I had are ABS and a single-sided swingarm to simplify my many, many chain adjustments, many of which take place at campsites or gas stations.   My chain is on its last legs requiring adjustment every 250-300 miles so the desire for easier adjustment is exacerbated at the moment.

I'm pleased.  The swingarm assembly is lighter than a SSSA, and a low-exhaust keeps the weight lower.  This thing should be even lighter...

Some new news...  which is actually not much for news.

CA docs submitted for 2013 models indicate no major engine or weight changes, despite spy pics showing significant chassis changes.  Also could indicate early releases.



Triumph has just become the first manufacturer to get any 2013 models approved by CARB – a requirement to be able to sell the bikes in California, which has stricter emissions limits than the rest of the United States. New documents show that the firm's 2013 Street Triple, Street Triple R, Daytona 675, Daytona 675R, Tiger 800 and Tiger 800XC have all been given the green light. They also show that, in terms of their engines at least, little is going to change.

....

What can we deduce? First, the two Tigers are unlikely to be altered for 2013 at all, while the Daytona and Street Triple models, while looking quite different, will probably feel much like the current versions (albeit with the addition of goodies like ABS from what we know already). Second, the firm's decision to get the 2013 models approved at this early stage of the year hints that they could be early release models, launched well before the usual end-of-year bike shows.

15% larger would be good- not in displacement, but physical dimensions!  The 675 is like a 7/8 scale model of a bike.

It only takes a little bit to get used to it.  It is tall though.  But very narrow.  Its funny cause when I'm in a tuck if I put my elbow out just a little bit I can feel my drag increasing.

Strom, I've been asking for the same thing for years now: A lightweight, small displacement tourer to replace my YZF600R, which currently has touring duty. I sent a 6-page report to Triumph back in 2004 or 2005 (can't remember when), saying that I don't need 1200cc's and a whole lot of excess weight.

If you're tall enough, the Tiger 800 is only about 470 pounds, which isn't too bad, though possibly more jacked up than you prefer for a really sporty sport-tourer.

I'd be perfectly happy with that 675 triple, with a wee fairing and more windscreen, please.

You could throw on something like an LSL Superbike bar kit or Convertibars and a tall screen or MRA X-creen on a Daytona 675 and probably get a lot of what you're looking for.   Soft luggage shouldn't be a real issue with the under-seat exhaust.

Here's one with the Bag's Connection Speedpack and huge gas-cap mounted tank bag (which obviates the need for a bigger screen, methinks!).
