i finally bought a new battery for the KLR. Knowing I would have to push start the bike should I take a tumble was starting to become a drag.
Armed with fresh juice and a better understanding of google maps, I went out to find some fresh trails.
The area I targeted was not traveled at all, sans one turned over sedan (With dead raccoon stuffed inside. Ewwwww) and one set of mountain bike tracks. I got the feeling the mountain bike dude wont be coming back as you can see his attempts to find hard pack. Fuck, peddaling is hard work!
The reasons these trails are so clean has much to do with the fact they are in parkland, and on private property. At least the entrance is.
so with the overhead view fresh in my mind, off I go.
These trees cut through the heart of the pine barrens, so the sand is pretty deep and beach like.
Sandy inclines are challenging but nothing knobbies and 33 HP cant handle.
The aforementioned car. I continue to be amazed at how folks can even get a car this far.
Did I mention the sand? Man, my legs got wiped out and it felt very much like piloting a boat most of the day.
This was strange. At some point the decision was made to construct an overpass for a road that didnt exist.
dirt over and under. Strange.

After crossing two major highways as planned I found my path blocked. Damn! I would have literally had to ride up someone's driveway and across their backyard. If they weren't having a bbq I would have fucking done it!
Next time...
I attempted to find another way in by heading east and North. I found a well used motoX track that cuts through the woods for miles. Im pretty sure this is private property and I know a cement place was aprox 1/4 mile down the road. A good rule for NY is not to fuck with cement people.
I tried to make haste but got all lost and stuff. There were lots of banked turns and they were quite fun. I did almost crash on one though.
Do I stay inside the fence or head outside?
pics dont do it justice but I couldnt make it up the bitch. There were two possible routes and the sand was just too freaking deep.
this is after the initial left turn.
This was the other possibility, with end result.
The bike just wouldnt do it. I thought knobbies were the answer to everything. I stood on the pegs, jumped up and down-just dug in. Bastard.
After digging out.
This trail led to an open field that led to more trails.
After being lost, I decided to bug out on the highway. Turned out I had 3 miles until the next exit.
With sun getting low in the sky I decided to take the main trail back. I followed my outgoing tracks and the thousands of deer prints. I've never seen so many deer prints in my life. I mean, this must be the local hangout for all LI deer or something.
Thats my tire track on the left. All the other divots in the sand are deer hoof prints.
I didn't see any turtle tracks, but did see a turtle.
Later bitches.

Dropping to 12 to 15 psi front and rear will let it run on top of the sand better. Much less trenching. You will be surprised how easy it will roll on sand once you find the pressure that works with your setup.

Yup - pressure down - carry a pump and add air for the slab home section.
It's like skiing powder - lay back and twist it, and steer from the rear.
After a week in Baja I really started to like sand - made crashing softer as well...
How many federal or local laws did you break riding there? Respect man...

You get full credit for battling deep sand on the KLR.

Good points about the tire pressure.
I'll go low and see what I can do.
