So, I'm the sponsor of the Engineering Club at my college.  My students have elected to build a bio-diesel go-kart as their project this year.  However, they have been looking around at engines, and it is nearly impossible to find a small used diesel engine within our budget (~$250, I think).  The least expensive one they have found is $250 (+$125 for shipping) for one that doesn't work.  If you happen to have something like this sitting around in your garage and would like to sell or donate it to a good cause (the children are our future, after all), please send me a PM.  Working is preferable.  We're willing and able to fix small stuff.

I do not have on, but you might wish to contact manufacturers and ask for a donation (every short term) . . . . .

An excellent suggestion.  We'll look into it.

Also, look at the places that sell used lawn mowers.  Think mom and pop places.

Good luck.  I want to drop one in a bike and tool around.

Medium sized garden tractors have many small 3 cyclinder engines.  I know you said 1 cyclinder, but your students will find out that the real world is all about adjusting your designs.  Smile  (Design for manufacture, eh?)

There are lots of beat up sailboats with small inboard diesels.  You could try and sailboat classified website maybe?

Maggie:
Have you contacted JD, CNH, Kobelco, etc?  All have small diesel (Compact tractor, SSL, Tracked mini excavator, etc...) products and "may" be willing to donate a used engine...especially if it's something they have used for tier III or tier IV emissions testing, for example.  I know that CNH is active in Society of Automotive Engineers and sponsors their annual contests in the Chicago area.

I can probably scare up a couple fo names at CNH if you need them...Rory works for the Evil Green Empire (JD) and may be able to get you started within the Waterloo campus.

Might also consider checking with Northern Tool...they may offer a liberal educational discount.

Call a few of the local equipment rental stores. they have units that hit the scrap metal bin that could be salvaged from small pumps and saws and stuff.

I have used a pressure washer that used a Lombardini 1 cylinder diesel, Think it was around 11 to 13 h.p. Was completely trouble free for the 5 years that I used it.
