JonS, what is the riding weather in early April usually? Thinking about a long ride from NJ.

I am not JonS, but I rode that area early April this year, and the weather there was great. However, crossing the Rockies is another story. I got stuck coming home due to a late snow storm and had to lay over a day in Montrose, CO. The same storm also hit the higher elevations in parts UT a bit as well. It's a mountain state, so it can always be hit or miss weather wise.
What he said. April can also be the time of wind/dust storms. I rode through a strong one last year. It was an adventure.

Jon,
Good report and outstanding pics. IMO you live in the most beautiful part of the USA. SE Utah is absolutely amazing! My wife, my brother and I spent a few weeks riding in the four corners area last summer--had a wonderful trip. Some of our favorite roads were just north of where you took this ride. I will definitely get back to SW Colorado/SE Utah again next summer. Like you, I hope to retire near there in a few years.
Jon
If we had it to do again, I think we would have chosen Cortez, or Dolores, CO for our home. Just because things, like supermarkets are more convenient.
Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Great pictures. Brought back memories of our trip in June 2010. Stayed a couple of nights at the hotel overlooking Monument Valley. We did a guided tour of the Valley and it was on of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had. The guide was a local Navajo and his wife. Would do it again in a minute. We were fortunate to have a private tour with just the other couple we were traveling with. Absolutely amazing.

That sounds like a very good idea! I've always been too cheap to hire a guide.

I plan on retiring somewhere where I don't have to shovel snow
The problem is finding year round riding on twisty roads without California's costs

The trouble around here is that most of the decent roads also have high elevations in places. Tucson is a great place, but I have no idea if there are good roads around there.

Great pics, thanks for posting. I would agree with the many comments about how lucky you are to be near such beautiful and unique geography. I was born in New England and live in Seattle now, and every time I got to the southwest I find myself in awe of the landscapes. Did you go clockwise or counter clockwise on your tour? I was through there this summer and enjoyed the ride so much I took too few pictures, oh well I'll have to go back again in a few years. Monument Valley was fabulous, riding up the Mogi Dugway was super fun! Next time I want to get off the pavement a little

My ride was just a there and back again thing. No loop. It did cross my mind to go back through the Valley Of the Gods, but I didn't
We moved here after living in Seattle for 18 years. My wife, all her life. The gray skies got to me. Her too, surprisingly.

Cool pics/ report, I'd like to tour around there myself next summer. I love the gray skies myself, easier on the eye's. It's the heat and sunshine that get me though it's nice in small doses.

Awesome pics, really nice perspectives. We got through there a few years ago and loved it. Would like to go back and spend more time, seeing things from different views.
Took this when we went through. Thought the rock kinda shadowed the bike.

Bingo!
Last Sunday, we went to Mexican hat for lunch (the cafe near the bridge has great cheeseburgers) and I am still amazed that that rock sits there and withstands the big wind we get now and then.

Rode into Monument Valley on a ho-hum day. Rode out feeling blessed for being allowed to see so much beauty. Your photos have inspired me to plan another trip. Next spring it's on my list.
