I'm thinking of downloading one of the lap timer apps from the market for this sunday.  Anyone using one or have a recommendation?  I'm just looking for lap time data logs using internal GPS for now.  I know it won't be totally accurate, but should at least show if I'm dropping time between sessions.

Did you ever get a droid app?

A bud of mine uses an app called trackmaster.  It's a paid for app from the market place.  There is also an addon you can get for use with a GPS receiver.  He's since moved to an iPhone so I might get the app/addons from him to try out at thunderbolt this year.

Post up if you get something else and how it worked for you.

I tried a free demo of aLapRecorderHD on my samsung intercept at Chuckwalla.  My phone didn't pick up a gps signal, and I got no info.  To be honest, I didn't put a lot of time into setting it up as my phone is getting replaced asap.  I'm running again on the 21st and I'll try to get aLap or trackmaster loaded on the new phone.  If I get ok results with the phone, I'll likely get a better gps receiver for more accurate times.

Waste of time.  They aren't designed for that and having the phone in a place where it can get smashed isn't good.

Meh, my phone getting smashed is the least of my worries. If I can get lap times within 1/2 sec. for a small buy-in I'd take it. As of now I get ball park times from video after I get home.  Some live feedback would be welcome at this point.  I'm still a newb and shaving seconds not tenths from 1st to last session.

If you want to shave 1/2 a second then just roll onto the throttle faster.  You don't need a GPS based lap timer.  even then the update frequency isn't the same as a real GPS based lap timer.

And smashing a $500+ phone isn't a worry of yours?

Oh, I know there are plenty of things I can do on the bike to go faster and shave time.

The point of the GPS timer is to give me info on how much of an improvement I'm making throughout the day while doing those things.  As to the update frequency, the apps I'm looking at allow BT tether to external GPS recievers with faster refresh rates and OBDII plugins for bike telemetry. So, there is a lot of fairly accurate data to be had from what I've read in the market reviews.   A $10 app and $60 GPS receiver seem like good values (if they in fact work) compared to task specific timing devices.

Smashing the phone?  I think I've maybe payed $100 total for all of the phones I've had through the years.  I just upgrade when I need to (like when I smashed my last phone on a off road ride).  So yeah, less worried about the phone then myself or other more expensive equipment.
