Looking for tips, leads, etc on good, cheap lodging or camping. Mom and Pop hotels are good, as long as they are clean. Looking to base our club's annual ride in the Custer, Hill City area, but open to suggestions.....

Custer/Hill city is good, not sure about deals on lodging? if you can't find deals there Rapid isn't all that bad a choice either (just don't stay on E. North St.). PM me your address and I will send you a tourism dept. map and some notes on roads/etc. If you like micro brews check out crow peak brewery in spearfish and the independant ale house in Rapid.

the above opinion is simply that of an average middle aged hick with one too many brain injuries... or, don't take it too serious.

+1 to anything black hills posts about the Black Hills.
I like Crooked Creek Campground just south of Hill City- very motorcycle friendly owners.

We stay in Custer and base there for weekend rides - rates depend on when you're there. There are a bunch of small mom & pop places that can be very cheap in both Custer and Hill City if there's not a big gathering.

My wife an I stayed at the Lantern Inn, Hill City SD last year and had a wonderful stay. Family owned and very friendly and helpful. You park your bike right by your door, the rooms are a little smaller than national chains but are spotless. During our stay probably 50% of the guests were on motorcycles.

I've been up there a about 5 times and I always stay at the Fish 'N Fry camprgound about 7 miles south of Lead/Deadwood. Nice place as far as camping goes, they have rustic cabins you can rent, heated pool, power bait fishing for the kids, etc. For dual sport riding it is a very ideal place to stay(Camp 5 is about 15 minutes of dirt from there), for pavement riding it is nice and close to Vanocker Canyon(best road in SD if you ask me with very little traffic if you aren't there in August), Nemo Rd, Spearfish Canyon, etc but a little far from the main attractions of Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse etc(which for me is a good thing, those places are like parking lots and I think the more fun riding is up North). Nice owners and your only 10 minutes from Deadwood if you want to go out for some night life.

Budget Host Motel in Hot Springs. Very clean, mom and pop and park at door, under canopy if wet. I stay there 4-6 times a year when riding Black Hills.

STN's Nat'l has been in Custer 3 X.
Just look up a couple of the old threads.
The place we booked last year had some REALLY good eats.
