Excellent post.
I'm sure they are much more "affordable" in other markets. I wonder why the price gouge? I think Ural would do better here as well if they were less expensive.
I just googled the price in India.
125,000 Indian Rupees, which is about $2500...

Because they can (gouge that is).....& they are probably the last bike still manufactured on the planet that you can fix with vise grips, screwdriver, & a hammer.....unlike all the new stuff

I think automobile manufacturers do more gouging "because they can" then much more limited appeal motorcycles specific ones. Still, it is a heck of a difference in cost between the markets. The thing is by lowering their initial cost, they seek to gain more buyers, which increases their end profit.

I agree, but that's only when a company is willing to see the big picture......& you have to admit with todays economic climate a lot of them aren't doing this (which is their loss)

I have it on good authority that a Nigerian Citizen has offered $5.3 Billion for Ducati but requires that $2.3 billion be sent back and Ducati can have the rest.
Seems like a good deal to me...

Despite the recent rumors of a possible purchase by Hero (of India), the latest news is that Audi (of all companies) is working on a deal to buy Ducati. So in the end, we may have VW Ducs after all.
http://news.motorbiker.org/blogs.nsf/dx/audi-to-buy-ducati.htm
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Industry-News/Audi-to-buy-Ducati--the-four-rings-expands-from-four-wheels/
Why is Audi buying Ducati?
It's all part of Project Eagle, another brainchild of Volkswagen group scion Ferdinand Piech. He has been eyeing up the opportunity of buying a prestigious motorcycle brand for some time, and considered reviving Horex, a German motorbike firm which made single- and twin-cylinder bikes from 1936 to 1956.

So many ST.N-based timing belt jokes. I'm ready to start completely unfounded and reckless speculation about future diesel-engined Ducati MotoGP prototypes. Maybe Audi 5000 sudden, unintended acceleration technology will be adapted?

Lamborghini hasn't exactly suffered at the hands of Audi/VW ownership.
This could be interesting.

A new challenger appears. Metrosexual, Italian industrialist Lap Elkann says he may make a bid to keep Ducati from falling into "foreign hands."
http://www.agi.it/english-version/business/elenco-notizie/201204021359-eco-ren1045-lapo_elkann_doesn_t_exclude_bid_for_ducati
He seems like a good fit to me. I bet he has multiple man purses.
