I just came back from a road trip and paid as much as $5.81 for a US gallon in Vancouver.

That works out to almost two twenties to fill the FJR. (I won't talk about my GMC Sierra 4x4)

But on a positive note, I do own an oil company.

oh, i think its great that they want to learn to ride.
but to save $ on gas? HAH! they will drop several thou, minimum, on a bike and gear, and maybe, just maybe, they will save a few hunnie on gas per year. and spend that same amount on tires.
but, if that's what it takes to get more noobs on a bike......

I've heard the tire-cost argument before, and it has some merit. However, we S-T.n-ers are high-miler sporting riders for the most part.  We (have convinced ourselves that we) need $300+ Z-rated multi-compound tires.  The average n00b commuter will be all about the Shinkos and the bias-ply Metzeler Marathons etc.
The TW (gummi chain notwithstanding) is an excellent urban warrior, there are 6K miles on its $150 Bridgestones and they could easily pass for new. Scooter tires are also rather cost effective, though if you really want to spend more, somebody out there will be happy to oblige.

I'm glad I unloaded the Explorer and bought a Fusion. I went from 16 mpg to 29+ in one fell swoop. If the weather ever improves I can ride the GS and get back to 45 mpg. Still be paying out the backside for gas though, $4.09 and rising here in the Pacific NorthWet

I did the math for a guy last time there was a gas price spike. Based on what he spent on fuel alone per month (lifted 4x4 3/4 ton dodge truck) he could have bought a BRAND NEW civic to commute in and still saved over $400 a month.    During my commute I notice that about every 4th or 5th vehicle is a large truck with nothing in the bed and one occupant. A massive waste of gas and money.

The math will depend on driving habits and truck.

For the average commute of 15 miles a day, the cost of buying a new vehicle (assuming the present big truck/SUV is paid for) is not cost effective in the short run (less than five years).  Nevertheless, it's their money let them waste it.  Many people out there will think you are silly for spending money on your motorcycles.  It all evens out.

The news media is lapping this up like thirsty dogs, whipping the citizens in to a lather...why people still get shocked at gas prices going up is beyond me.  I'd be more shocked if it dropped under $2 a gallon.  

True indeed.  I definitely don't like the price of fuel now, but honestly, after living more than a few years in countries where 7, 8 or 9 dollars a gallon is the normal, $3.53 still feels low-ish.

Now, the $4.03 I paid up in New Paltz earlier this week while on a jaunt through the Catskills on my bike?  Meh, wasn't really liking that...

I just read an interesting article in the OC register.

We produce 51% of the oil we use.  Of the imported oil, 25% comes from Canada.  The remaining 25% in almost equal amounts come from Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Venezuela, & Nigeria.  Since we buy our oil in the Energy Market (a kind of Wall Street trading zone for energy), prices are subject to a whole lot of analyst/trader speculations that affect supply.

Right now, there is the Syrian Civil War and the empty threats from Mujahadeb or whatever the fook that Iranian shithead’s name is.  Seriously, the world is just going to stand back and let this fool run around in his speed boats armed with RPG’s and shoot tankers in the Straits of Hormuz?  Let him drop mines?  Completely shut off his capability to sell his own oil?  I think not.  So I blame the speculators who are making a ton of money off of these empty, shallow, predictions of the near future.  

And if the President takes credit for our oil production/export, it’s misplaced since our government has almost zero capability to affect the price of oil or oil production in the short run (like two Presidential terms).

Better than my Nissan Titan that takes $90 to fill up and gets an amazing 12 mpg......and last 3-4 days. lol My VFR gets close to 45mpg.....cost $15-20......I never look at the pump, I look at how much is in the tank.....lol Last me a good 4-5 days. Plus, as a college student, parking is never an issue in campus.

I heard that ABS should be avoided on the F800St.  A buddy of mine traded his ABS model in for a non ABS one because if you brake hard on a bumpy road, or are braking as you , for example, hit a dip going into a gas station fore court, the ABS kicks in and allows the bike to freewheel until it detects a smooth surface underneath it.
This is specifically on the F800ST, not all ABS bikes.
