Still a sport tourer if? (New bike)
«
on:
March 27, 2012, 11:55:51 AM »
She's just really tall? Saturday I picked up a new bike after 5 weeks with out one. (My monster was totaled with a warped steering head among other damage from a relatively low speed gravel get off) I'd pretty much narrowed my search down to Futura, V11 Le Man, R1100S, ST3 and off and on the Multistrada. It was just so tall and hideous. A month of borrowing my housemate's car, Connie (until the shift linkage sheared off in the crankcase WTF?!) and then an 85 VF700F were grating hard on me. So I decided to start test riding Multis. There were lots of them for sale. This one had never been registered. After several years of sitting on the show room floor Ducati of Santa Cruz started using it a demo/loaner bike. For a nice price I took her home. I'm totally in love with her after 3 days of riding on awful roads in the rain.
Meet Dev! After coming over CA HWY 17 in the freezing rain.
Pulled that ugly CRG sticker off her and already planning $$$ in farkle; her mirrors are awful, she needs luggage, lights and half the crash protection of strada avventruos

Fun ride.
There are quite a few LEO's that can attest to the performance potential of that tall bike.....

You have bought a great sport tourer. You might need new bars and an aftermarket seat to make it comfortable for long rides, but that's about it. Of course, then you can start with the extras.

My definition of "sport tourer" is very broad.
If you like your trips on the roads less traveled and the twisties, you are probably a sport tourer.

I can believe that. Couple of days in and I'm finding this bike way easier to ride quick than my monster was. Especially on crappy roads.

Seat is definitely on the list, hoping I can get the squared away before I do the trip out to Utah at the end of May to see my new niece. Some hard luggage and better mirrors are top priority right now though.

He's pretty awesome; there are 3 of us.. right now insuring 4 bike (beat up 1990 Concours not shown because she lives in the shed) and 1 car under the same policy. We swap/borrow each other's bikes and car frequently enough that this makes the most sense for us and saves everybody a decent chuck of $$$. Of course that may be 5 bikes and 4 people in a month or two.

I love my Multistrada. It's my second. I sold my first fully expecting to buy something else when the time came. I ended up right back on a black MTS.
The mirrors do suck. I was OK with the new bike's mirrors but first one, then the other, started going goofy and now my left mirror looks almost straight up, and my right mirror straight down, no matter what I do to adjust them.
The seat sucks, too. I have a Sargent on this version.
The site multistrada.net you've probably already found, is a great specific site, and I believe the consensus there is FAR mirrors? I still have dreams of making mirrors that installed on the fairing that included the lights but also acted as some aerodynamic break for the handlebars, looking under your wrists instead of over.

I've owned both. I think there would be a lot of overlap and you'd eventually sell off one of them.

I agree with all points. Hopefully they make it again with the new 1200 engine they have (though I would take a new version with the same engine with more fuel-efficiency).

Yeah, I get a lovely blurry view of my elbows and shoulders no matter what I do with them. Far mirrors from moto science and some hard luggage whether used OEM side case or a huge top case are priority. After that is the seat and probably some huge hand guards to block the wind. How is the Sargent seat? Been riding up on it and the Russel but I think the Russel would be too wide. I'm short and the something wider/taller than the stock seat would put me on my tip toes instead of the balls of my feet.

True but they are owned by my roomies. The Norge is owned by Tixen who lurks here sometimes. She rides it every day, the interceptor is my other housemate's first bike.
I'd love a Norge as a mile eater but it's too big for my daily riding (wide and heavy would limit my lane sharing a lot more.)

Possibly, especially between the ST3 and MTS. The ST3 seem to lend itself to longer, higher speed sweepers and such while the multi is waaay more fun on tight, crappy roads.

I'd love to see that but with the Capo going more road oriented with this generation I don't see Aprilia spending the money to make an ST bike. Adventure bikes and faux adventure bikes are all the rage now which sucks for short people like me. A lot of the current generation bikes that appeal to me are all freaking tall. It seems the faux adventure bike segment has replaced the middle weight sport touring segment. On paper they look a lot a like (power, suspension, protection, bags, weight) just taller and with more relaxed ergos.
