Owls are awesome. What a cool bird - good save, glad you did the right thing. I had a similar occurrence with a baby wild rabbit. I think yours wins on cool points

Ha ha! We found a Great Horned Owl once. It's leg had been caught in some small animal trap, and it had finally came to rest along our neighbor's fence row. It was a good sized bird and PISSED. Examination from a distance indicated that the leg was not broken so we started plotting how to rescue it, since our county's idea of animal control was a deputy and a bullet. We were finally able to get a jacket over it and remove the trap. Last I knew, my dad still had the trap hanging in his garage.
It was probably actually a trap meant for the Owl. It is somewhat common, even if illegal, for farm owners who keep things like chickens to mount small traps on poles around the property. One of my co-workers keeps chickens and had a neighbor caught with traps. The Fish and Wildlife folks took the traps and the property owner will receive fines for each trap. They are for birds of prey like hawks and owls that like a nice chicken dinner every once in a while. They place them on the top of the poles because apparently some of the hawk breeds like to find a nice high vantage point to sit and scope out the hunting grounds before the swoop in.
My coworker uses flashing LED light deterrents and keeps his hunting dog pens not far from the chicken house so he does not have much of a problem with the hawks. He will shoot a coyote on his property if he sees one coming around though. He just knows that he will have a few chickens killed every year and counts it as part of doing business.

It's possible, but the only people raising chickens in the area were us, and we were fairly close to some areas where some folks did a lot of trapping. I guess it depends on how far that owl had managed to carry the trap.

I just spoke with my friend at the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife. The owl has been taken into the hospital. He will call me with updates as the day goes on.

Sorry to disappoint you Scott.
Owlgate? Really?
I just got the first update. He has no broken bones, he has some damage to his left retina which may heal. Owls can adapt and survive with one eye should it not. He has some brain trauma which should heal over the coming weeks. He seems to be responsive and indications suggest that his brain functions are not severely impaired.

First off - outstanding work saving the owl. It's beautiful.
Secondly - my rant... That owl is getting better health care than I have, and I bet he didn't pay $35K in taxes last year...

How many taxes did the kitty pay?

My buddy had an Owl living in a tree behind his house. One day, he watched as the owl swooped down and carried off his mini dashund. Couple days later, ther was no owl living behind his house.
