As in, officially retired. Technically not off the rolls until the end of next week; but today was my last day at work. Gladness, some sadness, gained about 5 pounds this week from all the lunch dates; I'll keep in touch with a lot of folks.
I showed up today wearing not the usual suit & tie, but a loud Hawaiian shirt.

Congrats man- enjoy it! At this point I still love what I do, and it will be a sad day when I throw in the towel. There's a teacher at school going through this right now. 42 years in the classroom.

Yeah, but are you going to stay retired? I retired in 09 and am working more now than when I was the fuzz. Enjoy.

Thanks all. I've got at least a couple more months to devote to renovating my house. I figger while the housing market's down I'll put some dosh into making it a bit more liveable for me and whoever else cares to shack up with a skinhead motorcycle-riding slacker
. We have some regional motorcycle events to attend in the spring & summer (including the STN National); then in late August if no one else's retired I'll probably do a solo jaunt out west, look up some friends in CA, and scope out some Lebensraum in Montana. Still thinking of raising goats as a sideline/hobby. As for work, in the DC area I always have the option of doing consulting with one of the established firms. My former employers tried to extract a promise from me to come back in that capacity in a couple months. But seriously - I don't want to, and my number crunching suggests I shouldn't have to. Still have some riding to do - next year we'd like to visit Iceland, and after that Europe or Australia.

Now that sounds like a retirement plan.
Congrats.
I've got 5 years left on my sentence.

Have a good time being retired! I will still be slaving away for the next 2.5-3 decades, but I'm saving 15% toward the day.

Congratulations Scratch. Well done.
I'm with the others. I'm at least 15 years away from even "semi-retirement" and trying my best to sock in 15% into the old 401k. Nowhere near my overall goal financially because I enjoy spending $$.
Do you have any advice for us "slaves"?

Great! I told the waitress that part of my retirement plan was to spend more time at local eateries annoying the staff. My coffee tasted funny.

In reading this thread - it looks like there's a lot more "experienced" (read "old") people on this forum than I would have expected.
Just funny how you get a certain idea of people based on a few posts & then you find out they are somewhat different (read "older") than you expected.
Carry on.
