Event for good cause goes wrong. Not your typical track day incident. RIP riders:

Note: I assumed they were riding cruisers but I don't have verification of this...

Sounds like a whole lot of derp was involved.  (and potentially chemicals and no helmets...  Shrug )

I'm assuming they hit head on.  Ouch.

Otherwise this was a really great event attended by over 60k people.  The riders were 66 and 71 yrs old.  The rider with the passenger was reported to have less than 1yr of riding experience.   Sad

how the hell did at least one rider end up going in the opposite direction?

The event organizers will be sued for every penny they have. That is just a bad, bad situation.

Yeah, that was my question too.  I'd be curious to see how that played out.

Witnesses told the Charlotte Observer that the motorcycle ridden by Mockus went out of control, slid down a bank, and crashed into the motorcycle ridden by Hollingsworth.

It seems Mockus was loaded, and Hollingsworth and his wife were 'innocent' in this.

...Cindy Spada, of South Glastonbury, Conn., a niece of Alan and Deborah Mockus, told the newspaper that organizers should have done more to prevent the tragedy.

But the motorcycles that collided were being driven on the track about a half-hour after the closing procession of motorcycles had left the event, according to witnesses.

how are they still on the track a half hour later?  Headscratch
kind of sounding like riders were allowed to ride until something bad happened.
