Need a good welder
«
on:
April 08, 2012, 06:27:27 AM »
Hey gang. I am in need of a good welder. I have SW-Motech rail system that was holding my E41 GIVI bags that snapped in the place that makes no sense why. Preferably in northern burbs.
Thank you in advance.

Here are few pics. I on purpose left out "G" at the end of the file as image is BIG.

Looks like aluminum. You need someone to braze it back together. Not as easy as welding, but not real expensive to get done either. I had the same thing done locally (Detroit) for about $30.

I can weld (somewhat) but it's not pretty.
And there that chance of burning a hole through the tubing to.
BTW your links don't work.

WTF that's weird looking.
I know of Marquette Steel in Ottawa.
http://www.ivcontractors.org/marqsteel.htm
Not sure if they work with aluminum, and can't really vouch for them personally, but they're in my town and that's all I know.

I've never seen a steel piece crack like that. It sure looks like aluminum.
Anyone with a heliarc setup can weld that back up in about 10 minutes. You might be able to do it with a small mig welder that will run aluminum wire. Which means about any welding shop could fix it.

OK, I can finally see the pics (hint, make me smaller next time) . . . .
You are right -- that break is in a very strange place, indeed -- I can't tell from the pic if there is a void in the metal or not . . . I would try to figure out what caused the break before welding it . . . next time, it ight let go at a really inconveninet time . . .
Lastly -- welding that place so it is invisible when done is far beyond my skill . . . .

Put a G at the end of the URL. They will pop up then, just like the guy said.

hehe. Step away from a day and you guys have all sort of fun
From what I gather this mount is steel, but I could be wrong. There does not appear to be a gap. It does nto have to win an sexy contests, but has to be done right i.e. wont come apart on me on the ride.
Reason for the big pic was to so you can truly see it, that is why I removed the G, so only those that really wants to see, see it.
History. I am not fully sure when and what caused, but I suspect is this is from when another FZ1 rider decided to fall on me with his bike at the stop and left bag ended up supporting both of the bikes.

that makes perfect sense (failure mode analysis) . . .I have a similar setup, and magnets stick to mine, so I would agree that it is steel . . ..
there are a bunch of structural welding joints on rt 176 in Roundout . . . . ..
