Japanese wisdom says perfection is attained when nothing more can be removed.

The FJR is case in point.

No, the FJR is saddly a microcosim of American society as a whole, overweight, underpowered and quite frankly butt-ugly

Like the little fat kid in the bumble bee outfit on that one faggot Hippy video about no rain or some stupid bullshit, a sad display of hopes and dreams missplaced....

I weep for us all...... Sad

Can a wanna be "Sport Tour Rider" ever get past the freeway/slab, city street, parade riding debauchery that has him cast into a delusional sensation of being one of the big boys?

Only if he puts forth an effort to seek out that so-far elusive fantasy of being a true " Sport Tour Rider"

Had to reply here. First off, the FJR IS a Sport-Tourer. Secondly, underpowered it is not. 145HP w/ a top speed that will exceed 150MPH. Your little Beamer has 1200cc's and barely makes 100HP. Lol 125MPH top speed. Get some knowledge before you spew nonsense.

Little fat kid? Maybe I should add another front fender to make it prettier?  Rolleyes

Well,  then I'd say you have some reading to do,  till then,  don't feel bad, we all agree that the FJR is a fine sporty TOURING bike.  One day when I'm old  (but not old enough for a Yellow Gold Wing), I may get one ......   naaaaaa,   I'd rather have a Miata.     Twofinger

BTW,  to save you all sorts of aggravation,  let's just cut you some slake.   FJR's are the current focus of good natured jokes on this forum.  Their owners seem to be able to handle it, so we'll continue until someone blows a gasket or something.   Prior to the fat overweight FJR's, VFR's were the target, as they are just too heavy, complicated, expensive and underpowered to be taken seriously.  We'd make fun of Guzzi riders, but they'd not notice as they're all comparing Cappuccino  recipes right now.  Basically any bike bigger than a CBR1100xx is a fat pig, anything smaller is underpowered and too tiny to take seriously,  if it's not blue, it's slow,  if it's red, you're an attention whore,  loud pipes=small penis,   ....   anything I miss???

If one accelerates quickly down a steep grade the perceived weight issue will be reduced for a limited time.

And there might be a Myth busters episode on the rumored progeny due to the crossbreeding of a GS and an FJR .

Will it really result in a light blue Miata.. or are other colors possible?  Bigsmile

This is nothing but slander, a review of my comments shows they are 100% accurate.  It is not my responsibility to worry about how the hyper sensitive FJR riders perceive my presentation of facts...I may report your post.

Let's not be hasty here, FJR riders like Harley Davidson riders show a considerable amount of loyalty to their mounts, often mistaking the excess weight and lack of power as somehow positive attributes. Much like the Buick Electra's they were patterned after they tout their girth as "road holding weight" and the mushy suspension as providing "cloud like comfort".... Can you really blame them for their naivete`?

Always VELCRO your STN stickers on your bike. Easy removal and re-application.

Those two are Hollywood types, of course they needed a ton of crap and an entourage to do anything. Normal GS riders take only the standard BMW tool kit consisting of a cell phone and credit card plus a Leatherman tool on our globetrotting jaunts

Actually the Intelligence Oversight Law forbids me to target U.S. Citizens within the boundaries of the United States.   If it's part of a Federal investigation I can assist in the collection but can not keep files. The files belong to the FBI.  The rules are strictly followed by the military and most 3 letter agencies as far as I have seen.   But if you end up on the "No Fly" list even by accident then you're pretty much screwed.

Being relatively new, it's nice to know the generally accepted rules of the group.  Reminds me of a list of personal ad definitions I saw once...

40-ish..............................49
Adventurous.....................Sleeps with everyone
Looking to settle down.......Slept with everyone, an now has an STD
Athletic............................sma ll breasts
Emotionally Secure............On medication
Outgoing..........................Loud and embarrassing
Etc.
Etc.

Like I said...good to know.  Can we assume if it's black, the owner is anti-social?

BTW, my bike has stock pipes.... Bigsmile

So lets see all those FJR tattoos.

Well, it has been several months and many votes (By motorcycle experts) and I am thus closing this poll as we have a definitive answer.

The overwhelming consensus of our motorcycle experts is that it is impossible to reduce the weight of the FJR to the point where one can sport tour on this fine touring machine.

I want to thank everyone for their help in answering this question.  A white paper will be published shortly.

A BMW is a nice bike. The engine design is older than Harley's V-Twin. A real blast from the past.

I almost bought a BMW R1200RT. But the FJR has way more HP, has better reliability, has better build quality, has lower cost of ownership, is much faster, handles much better, has better brakes, better lighting, better instrument panel, and was more comfortable. Other than that I almost went with the Beemer.

Had an FJR, got a Tiger 1050 just to lose 150 or so pounds.  Fact is though, a well ridden FJR flat leave average rider "sport" bikes.  The FJR needs new forks and a real shock.  If you want a sport bike that you will go touring on that's one thing, but the FJR is, as has been said a great sport tourer.  A Gixxer with a shit load of crap strapped to it is a sport tourer too, just a crappy one.  The FJR was a helluva lot more work to push through twisties than the Tiger.  Then again I've seen sport bikes have problems chasing a fully loaded GS.  This was kindofa troll question wasn't it  Lol

Can you reduce the weight of an FJR enough to make it a sport-tourer?

It depends on how you chose, or allow the marketing machine to chose for you how "sport-touring" is defined. I've had ST bikes that were heavier, and ST bikes that were lighter, the only thing the weight changed is how much pressure I put on the bars.
