Remove the tank.  Take out the six or so Phillips head screws on the airbox cover.  Remove filter.

Maybe there's a VFR thing going on.  (Very Fine for Rodents?)  Here's mine as I found it earlier this spring...

If you have one, remove it. It will flow even better than a K&N.

I'm sure BMW developed an overly complex self-cleaning air cleaner if it even needs one, as "ve have vays of makink air clean."  Lol

We shall over engineer this part so it never breaks.

Then when it breaks instead of costing 13 dollars to fix, it's 4 hours labor $300 in parts, and oh yeah, the parts are on back-order.

Remove seat
pop off the little piece of black trim at the front of the tank held on by 2 rivets
remove the black trim panels below the seat on either side
remove the side panels
2 bolts on the tank. 12mm in back 10mm up front
disconnect fuel line
remove tank

After you do it a few times you'll be able to pull it without removing any bodywork except for the small black trim at the front of the tank.  Just loosen the side panel bolts for some wiggle room.

just cleaned the Uni Filter on the FJR this weekend - and it needed it as it had 15k miles on it.

I always INTEND to clean it more often but never seem to get around to it.

I  have heard that filter weighs something like 25 pounds....
