cultureslayer: I'm clueless and need a place where I can ask about shoe purchases and fashion. Will STN also fill this niche of my life? Any women's issues are ok here as well. Menstruation to nail polish and beyond. Bought these because I want some closed toe summer shoes (so I can wear them to work) and closed toe sandals look icky to me. Did I do ok? http://www.sierratradingpost.com/jambu-cascade-mary-jane-shoes-for-women~p~4106m/?filterString=s~jambu-shoes-for-women%2F&colorFamily=01 I need to find a sundress type thing to wear to a casual summer wedding and on vacation. If any of you have bought one recently post links and save me from looking. :D |

If any of you have bought one recently post links and save me from looking. :D We're on a motorcycle forum. If you're looking for the girly-girls, then you've come to the wrong place. I will try my best to fill this missing niche. The shoes are cute in a GI Mary Jane kinda way. I would wear them to work in a lab setting (like my lab, ferinstance). I just bought a nice dress at Dress Barn (yeah, I know the name sucks), but couldn't find a pic. I was browsing their website and thought this one was cute. However, the new shoes will not go with it. |

stefrrr: Did someone say shoes?!? :D I like Sierra Trading Post for comfy & useful shoes. I also have one brand that I know exactly which size fits my foot for dressier & work shoes. There's some variation within the manufacturer, but I can be reasonably assured that any shoe in this size by that company will fit. 1. Go to an expensive shoe store. Get a nice old man to measure your feet accurately. Yes, you can do it yourself, but it helps to have someone else do it so you've got your weight properly on the Brannock Device. Not only that, but he'll have some expertise. Their shoes may not fit you, so don't worry if you don't find something there that works. 2. There's some variation in shoe manufacturers' engineering - Without going into too much detail, some shoes are better for people with narrow feet & high arches, some are better for people with wide feet and low insteps. All you care about are which ones fit your feet. 3. Ask that nice old man who measured your feet if he knows a shoe that might be good for your feet. He might save you some time. 4. Try on a BUNCH of shoes in different brands, paying attention to the ones that fit best. What do their soles look like? Do they have a heel? What shape is the toe? 5. Buy a pair or two. Note the brand, size, & other attributes of the one(s) that fits best. 6. Remember the brand & size that fits best. (Do I sound repetitive?) 7. If you don't find what you want in a store, search for similar shoes by that brand online. Almost no brick & mortar actually carries my size in stock, so I feel no guilt buying most of my shoes online. Most stores carry only whole & half sizes in B width. The thing with brands is not because one is cooler or whatever, but to remember that they all produce shoes that might fit a particular foot better. I love the looks of Clarks & Privos, but they never have enough volume for my high instep. :( Leather is your friend. It stretches & conforms to your foot, looks nice, lasts a long time, and is polishable. Shoes that fit, last, and appeal to your sense of style get worn more often. Synthetics have come a long way, but quality varies. Probably so much more (and more difficult) than you were looking for. I should open a shoe store. I freaking love shoes. :D |

stefrrr: Oh, and those shoes look nice. They're kind of casual; are they for work? |

cultureslayer: It turns out sierra trading post pretty much always has 35% off codes. :bigok: The shoes are for tutoring or working in my lab in the electrical engineering department. Standards are very low, to the point that I saw a ton of people wearing socks with sandals today. I also ordered these thinking they might be good for weekends/vacation (and leather, so I could wear them with a casual dress) http://www.sierratradingpost.com/teva-meadow-luxe-sandals-for-women~p~4214f/?filterString=s~teva-luxe%2F&colorFamily=01 Thanks for suggesting dressbarn. I didn't realize they went down to size 4, so maybe they will have stuff that fits. |
