http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-nfl-legend-junior-seau-dead-182120394.html

TMZ is reporting retired NFL star Junior Seau is dead, and the police are investigating a shooting in his home:

NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.

During his playing days, Junior Seau had the reputation of being a hard-hitting linebacker. He played in the NFL for 20 seasons, mostly with the San Diego Chargers before also playing for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. When he finished playing in 2009, he had 56.5 sacks, 1,524 tackles, and 12 Pro Bowl appearances.

Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers '94 Super Bowl team to pass.

Yikes. Aren't there only like 45 players on a regular season NFL roster?

These guys would have to be just forty to mid fifties. I know there are way too many linemen with heart issues dying young, but eight out of forty-five is a big number no matter the cause of death.

Smart for him to do it in the chest.  I figured that's what he would do.  He probably has terrible brain damage from his playing days and wanted to preserve his brain for confirmation.  Sad but smart, if that's the case.

From that same article in the OP....

Quote
If Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, it is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life. Duerson shot himself in the chest on February 17, 2011 -- the method used so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a trauma-induced disease common to NFL players and others who have received repeated blows to the head.

Seau had an incident maybe six months ago that was thought to have been a suicide attempt. He drove his SUV off a cliff if I remember correctly.

I honestly don't understand how anyone could get to that frame of mind where it's better to kill yourself than stick it out and work through the issues. Now he's saddled his kids and family and friends with grief and anguish.  Sad  Shrug

If this was something neurologically-related, well, then that's something different.

But yeah, he was one helluva football player.  Thumbsup

Depression is not rational.

The next time you feel like your on top of the world, remember the pain people around you may bear with no outward appearances.

I used to be s small town loan officer at a community bank.  I had a customer who was 4 months late on his car payments. I called- sent letters etc. It really wasn't the end of the world, and I would have been willing to cut him a break - or several . But with no contact or communication from him, I had no choice and eventually i was forced to issue a repossession order.  We got the truck back; the next day, he hung himself...

I'm sure the truck wasn't his "big issue," but you never know where people are at in their lives or what might be the last straw...

There is a good reason why I don't own or will never own a gun. I'm on meds to keep Depression at bay. I didn't ask for this and there isn't much I can do about it.

I can totally understand someone having suicidal thoughts, they creep into your mind though you wish they'd just go away, along with the melancholy.

Until you've walked a mile inside a man's mind......

I saw the headlines read "Pro Bowler Dies" and they had a picture of him.  First thing I thought is "Holy Shit... That guy should have been a football player, not a professional bowler.

I'm in Canada. We dont have football.  No disrespect intended.

Huh, it's weird how the word "football" is right in the name.

Yes, I know you're attempting to be witty and denigrate football to the north...please carry on.

Warren Moon?

Great quarterback that the NFL didn't want for some reason and had to play in the CFL for yrs. Finally the Oilers "took a chance" and we got Warren Moon and Company. What else do you wanna know?

As a former Oilers fan, I doubt there's much you could add to what I already know. The first 3 years were absolutely brutal to watch.
