Just a little more

About 3 weeks ago I went out to pull the front and rear wheels to have the tires changed. I noticed the left fork seal weeping a little and a small puddle under the left fork. Crap.  Sad  "But wait", says my inner demon, "you've been wanting to have the forks rebuilt and Race Tech gold valves installed; now's the perfect time". "That costs too damn much" says I. We argued about it for about 5 minutes.  Bigsmile  I went online and checked the price, called and talked to Christy at Race Tech and we made the decision to splurge.

They came in today.

I can't wait for this weekend. I'll be putting my new forks on and changing the steering head bearings too.

Life is good.

Hey I gots a fork tube just like that upper one in the vise waiting for a couple hundred ML of oil right now...... Razz

I've done the re-spring on mine, but not the re-valve. Made a huge difference, but I think I'm ready to skip to the next step: http://www.traxxion.com/AK-20AxxionCartridgeKit.aspx

FWIW, and I know it's not the smartest thing anyone has done, I used the spring kit and valve kit in a 1985 Virago 700. I also used a set of custom built WORKS dual rate Street Trackers for the rear.

I did the forks months before I replaced the rear shocks and OMG!! What a difference!

The shocks completed the package and that bike could rail the twisties!

You're going to be delighted with those forks!

I just sold the Virago and the new owner test drove it and had that 'certain look' in his eyes after the test drive and huge compliments on the smooth but nimble handling, he couldn't slap the cash in my hand fast enough.

I'm with you.  I did the springs and gold valves in 2 HDs and springs and emulators in 1 Honda XL600R.  The FXDX got a rebuild on the rear too to complete it.  Like you said, the bike could rail.  Night and day once dialed in.  Tires lasted longer on the open road too.

I personally don`t like very progressive Race Tech shim stack  ( it looks like a pyramid ) . I did g/f`s yzf1000r with race tech valves and their shim settings .
I did not liked results at all , it still had way too much high speeed dumping that could not be dialed out.
I tore apart my ak20 from my track bike and essentially duplicated Traxxion Dynamics shim settings on her bike . The results are fantastic , of course suspension is highly subjective issue .

Honda`s HMAS valves are actually very good , IMHO no need to replace them , they just needs different shims stack .
Suspension companies make more money selling you 180-200 $ valves then 20 bucks worth of shims that is why they push for the new hardware .
