but then wimmin hafta put up with men telling them that there is no way they can ride across the country alone...so in that sense, a wimin's ride day can't hurt  Bigok

Just keeping it real over here, but for the most part, motorcycles scare the bejezus out of those of the vaginal persuasion.  So that said, and as much of an MRA as I am, I really feel pride when I see a woman riding a motorcycle.   I also do not see a reason why they can't get together in a group and ride (and call themselves Iron Lionesses - that's kind of badass).  I just think it's stupid for them to point out, "HEY!  HEEYYY!!!  We're WOOMMEENNN and we're riding MOTORCYCLESSSSS!  Pay ATTENTION  to us!!!" Meh - I'm not impressed.  Get over yourselves, ladies.  You don't see fellas making a big fuss about participating in ballet... or stripping for that matter. Bigsmile

I guess growing up with an active duty mom (Army, Chemical Officer) has had a real effect on why I offer women an absolute lack of any sort of special treatment from me, which they may normally get from others.  Motorcycles included.

Yup, I am an alien in a space suit, riding a big red bird.  Blind faith is an ironic gif

The point I wuz trying to make is that guys don't usually have people telling them they can't ride across the country.

How many wimin out there have hubbys who tell them that they're not good enuff to ride and that they'd be better off sitting on back behind him?

Those extra hurdles wimin face may help a Female Ride Day give a boost to women on the outside looking in.

If it lights the spark within one woman's imagination that she can ride across town, let alone across the country, then it would be a success in my book  Smile Thumbsup

I just think it's stupid for them to point out, "HEY!  HEEYYY!!!  We're WOOMMEENNN and we're riding MOTORCYCLESSSSS!  Pay ATTENTION  to us!!!"

I guess my issue is that I don't see this happening.  :head scratch:

Is the implication that a news release discussing International Female Ride Day, and the various rides available to women on that day, is equivalent to women yelling "HEY PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!!"?  That seems to be the opinion of many people on this thread and I have to admit that I don't get it.  I haven't seen any women begging for credit/attention/etc.   Shrug

Or are you guys talking about behavior that you've seen "in real life" totally separate from International Female Ride Day and it's just getting brought up in this thread because we happen to be talking about female riders?  Maybe I'm just totally sleep deprived but I'm having cognitive dissidence.  Lmao

I see this as awareness building. Pure and simple and not some attempt at specialization.  Awareness of the mosaic and broad range of backgrounds that makes up the riding community. Ride to Work Day - do you really have to be employed to do that or could volunteers as well?  Ride for Dad Day etc ... Traditionally motorcycling has had an image problem. In the past that was heavily associated with the Outlaw Biker community. Now part of that image problem is street stunting, YouTube recklessness etc.
Woman are an important sub group of the whole community and it is important that there is some recognition of our diversity, mainstream makeup and how we are typical people.

Me? Personally, I only ride on August 8th, my sub group day.  W.E.R.A. H.U.N.G. Ride Day. In honour of our founder Mr. Holmes.

Are we special? ... kinda, but not really. But we are part of this great community and should communicate that to the non riding public.

Well, you're in luck. I don't think the event was intended to impress you or anyone else. The point is to empower women to take part in an activity that still carries a pretty strong social stigma for them. I don't see anyone asking for special treatment either. Just a group of riders recognizing and celebrating the fact that they're riders and building a little awareness at the same time. What's wrong with that?

Ride to work day is coming up. I'm a daily commuter and will take part in that again for many of the same reasons. I don't see the difference.

Sometimes, when my wife passes me on the outside in a turn, when I catch up to her, I'll tell her in a very stern voice that she should NOT do that.  HA!  Take that, girlie.

The point I wuz trying to make is that guys don't usually have people telling them they can't ride across the country.

I've gotten this a few times.  I rode downstate alone for a family party one time a few years ago.  Fourstring's aunt said, "You rode down here?  All by yourself?"

Like I was a fricken' child or something.  No one would have said anything if it was Fourstring who had done it.

I've learned to ignore that sort of stuff over the years, since I've spent my whole life being interested in things that are considered male pursuits - physics, science fiction, and motorcycles.  There's no point in getting upset about it.  I just charge on ahead and do what I like.  However, I understand that there are a lot of women out there who allow themselves to be intimidated whenever someone, male or female, tells them they can't do something.  Hence the International Female Ride Day.
