My good deed for the day: Preventing an HD rider from a dead bike
«

Walking downtown on break I notice an HD (Sportster, I think; it was one of the smaller Harleys) loaded with camping gear. What drew my attention was the yellowish beam shone by his headlight. No key in the ignition as HD has some sort of way to leave the ignition turned on once key is removed.
Bike was parked in front of Deschutes Brewery so I figured odds were in my favor. Yep, he was at the bar having a local microbrew. It would've sucked to have your trip stalled by a dead battery, so he zipped out and turned the ignition off.
I'm hoping the motorcycle gods adjust my riding karma score appropriately.

The HD I rode had a fob. You could lock the on off switch but if you didn't anyone could walk up and turn the bike on. It just wouldn't start without the fob being close to the bike.
+
to you for helping the guy out.

Seeing he was on a Sportster, did his beer have a cute little slice of fruit garnishing it?

Depending on how many beers he actually ended up drinking in his 'session', a dead battery might have been his best friend.
+1 for the kindly act though.

No key in the ignition as HD has some sort of way to leave the ignition turned on once key is removed.
On my Triumph, if you turn the key past lock, it will turn the running lights on. That's probably what this guy did.

I've done exactly that and bump starting a big triple on the polished concrete of parking garage is almost "umposible"

gah. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I nearly had a coronary pushing my ST around a parking lot for half an hour trying to bump start it. ( I broke down and called my wife to rescue me.
) Couldn't get the rear tire to hook up for the life of me.
My parking lot at work is now covered in a hundred one foot long skid marks
