Don't upgrade RAM from Apple... Order from crucial.com and save hundreds of $$$ for very high quality sticks.

That's usually good advice, but in the case of the Macbook Air they're not user upgradable.
Anyone looking to upgrade from 2 to 4GB post purchase is going to be mighty disappointed at the effort and warranty voiding involved.

I have a MacBook Air, IPad 2 and a iPhone 4 and there seems to be an overlap. If I was working, that would be diffrent

Very happy with my circa 2008 MacBook (white, basic model), still running its original HD.
However, it's time for a new one. I'm still going bottom of the line, BTW, but I'm hesitating between a MacBookPro and a MBA. Hints, pointers?

The new Macbook Pros with Ivy bridge and retina displays are coming out next month. Don't buy anything until then. Not sure if the air is getting those updates or not.

My daughter loves her Macbook air. She should for what it cost me.
Me? I like'em well enough but I'll stick with Windows & Linux and machines that might not be quite as pretty but do the job.

Thanks all. It looks like now we might be going with a standard Windows laptop for 1/3-1/4 the price. For what my wife uses it for it just doesn't make sense right now.

You wasted your time by opening any MAC thread since they all quickly become Mac Haters vs. Mac Fanboys pissing on each other over which shitty machine is "best"

Who is using one? What for? How do you like it? I'm not an apple fanboy, and it kills me that we can get a standard laptop at half the price that does so much more, but my wife is interested. She is a doctoral grad still working on research. Primary use will be for school (she starts as a professor this fall), powerpoints, word processing, email and the internet. So, sell me on this device.

I thought I was pretty clear- I didn't care for it, but wife did.
She is finally deciding that for what she's using it for an $800 bow to peer pressure might not be needed.
I'm not saying we won't ever go that way- in fact, I could see a standard mac book replacing the machine we are going to buy in a few years. Then I could use it for video processing, which IMO is one of the true strengths of the Apples.
Besides- if you're here, you're already wasting your time.

So true. Sitting at home watching America's Funniest Videos while waiting for county health to show up to inspect my very ill septic system.

yeah. i get mine through RamJet (ramjet.com) and it's about half the price as through Apple. Be sure when buying to get Apple cert memory since the timing specs are tighter than for WinTel.

this. you may not get ivy bridge but the pricing on the current items will drop when the new stuff comes out.
i'd go with the Macbook Pro unless you HAVE to have light and are willing to sacrifice performance. that being said, my 15" MBPro is plenty. the 17" would be too heavy except for semi-static placement.

Could you expand on that?

Apple pulled a lot of the "pro" features out of Final Cut X and drastically changed the interface to make it more consumer friendly. Basically, they gave up a tiny slice of the market at the high end in order to open up a much larger potential in the middle. They also dropped the price from (IIRC) $1000 to $300.
Many of those features will probably make their way back in to the product but by the time that happens everyone who can afford it will have probably moved back to Avid.

Correct. The "Prosumer" market is huge and growing, whereas the dedicated pro market for that kind of product is several hundred users at the very most. It's a good business move, but a rather sucky thing to have happen if you're a true pro.
