Last Saturday I rode through Clinton Iowa from the South. I encountered the second worse e"special"ly bad smell I've ever had to process that morning. I think it was a combination of soybeans being cooked, a meat plant, and raw sewage. It was so indescribably foul I had to mouth-breathe for about two miles.
The worst smell I've ever encountered was after a round of golf on a really hot summer day when I had been sweating all day. I was sitting on my couch and my Boston Terrier - Otis - decided to jump up onto the armrest to hang out with me. The way he was sitting he had his ass resting on my left bicep. After a while he got down and then the smell wafted up to my nostrils. He'd had diarrhea and his anal gland needed purging when he sat on my sweaty arm. It was a combination of the most heinous B.O., dogshit and fishy anal gland goo mixed together - I literally gagged and ran to the bathroom to throw up. Ewwww.
Clinton Iowa is almost that bad.

Actually the worst smells I've ever encountered on a bike (or cage for that matter) were some of the agricultural fields in Central California inland areas around Santa Maria.
The broccoli, cauliflower, and strawberry fields were fertilized with what smelled like rotten fish guts. Horrid to say the least and enough to gag a maggot.

Even Marilyn Monroe's image made it out to the country. She wore Chanel No.5 to bed...and nothing else.

I got behind a rendering works truck for a mile or so once.
For those of you that don't know, it's an open dump semi-trailer full of the rotting carcasses of dead animals from local farms. They take them down to a processing plant and make hot dogs. (Just kidding- they make dog food base). Riding past the plant has a very unique smell- the rot smell is gone- it's more of an over-cooked meat smell.

Good -- There used to be a Sara Lee plant near our house . . . .riding home late at night tilting your head back (open faced helmets) and shotgunning chocolate sniffs up yer nose . . . . . . .
Not so good -- following a chicken truck through the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel . . . .

Couple of years ago....riding the Avenue of the Giants, alone on an early fall day.
The solitude, the grandeur of those trees, the utter stillness, all wrapped around the nose of fresh earth and moss...definitely turned into one of those 'I need to stop now' moments.
Parked it and just stood there for 20 minutes soaking it all in.....it was glorious.

During the 4/20 rally at the CU-Boulder campus the school put down some kind of fish based fertilizer to "discourage" the pot protesters for congregating on campus.

That reminded me of when I lived in Dallas driving by the the old Mrs. Baird's bread plant near the SMU campus, that area smelled great.

I never understood why dogs want to stick their noses out the window of a car until I started riding a motorcycle.

Cow shit is my special smell.
Same here. Reminds me of Bavaria. So far this looks like the popular answer.

North side of Philadelphia... on Roosevelt Blvd, just south of the turnpike, is Kraft food's Nabisco plant. Wonderful smell of baked goods.
Not a safe place to stop and enjoy the smell though.
