I'm going to put a set of D&D pipes on my FJR next week and just wondering what the gendarmes are doing to us for noise, if anything.  I've never had a ticket for noise anywhere so I might be heading for a new first for me......lol........also wonder where the places are with NO sense of humor RE pipes...............

D&D pipes are maybe the noisiest I've ever heard.

How are they for the FJR?

With the volume level of the open short pipe crowd around here I wouldn't worry at all with any kind of muffler.

And you're adding very noisy pipes because??? More HP, women will think you're hot, everyone will believe you're faster than them?? We definitely need another bike making a bunch of racket for no other discernible reason than to stroke the stunted ego of the rider.

I don't have the pipes yet......but will try and be a good neighbor even with the pipes.  As for why......well I ride with a wonderful group that seems to value some noise, and I tend to be surrounded by loud HD's.......and let's just say they may be in for a surprise next week........... Lol

Yeah, I'd count myself in the steath crowd. My moto-gear is grey or black, and I'd not even consider louder pipes, unless I'd get a significant hp increase..

For me, I already consider I'm invisible and ride that way. Adding extra noise only attracts cops, in my view...

Though, if you're riding at a hardly pace, you can probably get away with open pipes. Other hand, if you're gonna wack the throttle climbing the mountains through the twisties, not really good to advertise your arrival for what ever moto-cops near the top.... Shrug

I ride the same stealthy way and expect nobody sees me also.......this is an experiment......I'll be keeping the stock pipes and no mods will be done to the bike, so I can switch back in 15 minutes if I come blasting up the white line and stop next to the local PD with bad results.......lol..........I have no intentions of screaming thru the neighborhood at 9K.........and this may actually slow me up a bit..........so far I don't see a lot of wails of anguish over tickets written.......a good thing.............

I haven't had any issues, but when selecting a pipe I'm kinda picky about the noise level.  I do remember reading a news article about an officer in Laguna Beach that was citing bikes with loud pipes a while back.

Yeah, if you got the stock pipe to switch back, really no worries on the (noise) ticket. My point of view, calling attention to yourself on the noise part is asking for a a speeding ticket as well. Though, same time, I've been rocking the SV650 with thudding Scorpion pipe for many runs and I have to agree the satisfaction coming outta the pipe, from riders perspective, it's nice! Not sure about how the rest of the world likes me, but only one outta four bike s with the littlest one on the pipe, could be worse!  Lol

I ran a CF Akra on my CBR600 for 5 years until I sold the bike and never had any problems.  Only got one ticket on that bike and the moto cop knocked it down from 56 in a 40 to 45 in a 40.  Didn't have any comments about my exhaust.  It was a very deep, refined tone, and I never felt it to be excessively loud, but it was loud enough that I never had problems with people trying to occupy a traffic lane while I was in it.

However, as I was having a late night snack along our "cruise" stretch with some riding buddies one night we sat and watched a moto cop pull cars and bikes left and right.  At one point he stopped by and we asked what he was ticketing for.  "Aftermarket exhausts" was his answer, but then he then gave our 3 bikes a look over (all had aftermarket exhausts), complimented us, and went on his marry way.

I think as long as it's not obnoxiously loud and you're not riding like a dick, you'll be just fine.  But it seems to vary greatly by the jurisdiction.

I always laugh at the "anti-pipes" crowd that quote the whole "statistically they don't save lives because left-turners never hear you coming."  However, in my experience running the Akra on my CBR, and comparing it to the stock CBR and a stock VFR, the difference would blow your mind when it comes to people checking their blind spot around you.  If people hear a bike, they are noticeably more alert, and I've found that to be the case with myself as well.  People can bash aftermarket pipes all they want, but I have no doubts from my experience that a louder bike increases driver awareness.
And yes, you can (and should) be a defensive rider, but there is only so much you can do when trapped in 8 lanes of rush hour freeway traffic...

That's all we need  is one more obnoxious inconsiderate noise maker.
Daytona has cracked down on the noise, there the peace and quiet out ways the loss of tourist revenue.
Communities, parks, residential associations have banned all bikes.
Various cities and states have laws banning after market pipes.
Do you see a trend here?

Ask yourself,do you really need to make noise to ride a bike?
If so, you're not much of  a rider just another noise maker

Around my area, it's early 90s Honda Civics with rusted out grapefruit launchers that create the biggest racket.  Of course, they still have the "No Fear" stickers on them.   Lol  So frankly, when I hear a tastefully-done motorcycle exhaust go by, it's music to me.  There will always be some among us who appear to want every motorcycle to sound like a Toyota Prius.   Sleepy  But if you want to put pipes on your FJR, do it.  Like you said, it's easy to upshift and ride through neighborhoods in lower RPMs so as to not annoy everyone.  However, I would caution against D&D.  I haven't heard them on FJRs, but they are notoriously among the loudest of pipes.  I'd suggest another make/model.

That bike needs a pipe just to showcase the beautiful v-twin sound!  I have a Delkevic on mine.  It comes with a DB killer (small removable pipe that inserts into the actual muffler in case I want it quieter).  At low RPMs, it's a low frequency, almost-soothing rumble.  So that satisfaction can even be had without WOT.   Thumbsup

UFB...

Do open pipes suck? Yes....

Is there somewhere between stock and open pipes that lets you hear a nice motor without being obnoxious? Yes...

I'm enough of a gear head to enjoy the sound of a performance engine - subdued when putting around town and more pronounced when opened up.

To the folks with their panties in a wad over anyone not riding a Prius sounding motorcycle and who feel you are "not much of a rider" if you dont I say FYYFF!  Twofinger

Moderation is a wonderful thing.
