Yes.
Any drive train mod that doesn't make more power is nothing but metal masturbation.
Pure bullshit.
A waste of money, time, and effort.
To do what?
Piss people off?
Doesn't take a genius to see the fallacy in THAT...
Make it go faster, brake harder, turn better, be more comfortable, provide more information, be measurably BETTER, or leave it the fuck alone.
That's such a mind-blowingly ridiculous comment I'm going to assume you're just trolling... but I'll give in a little bit.
With similar logic as you're proposing, making ANY modification to a bike is pointless. You know why? Because no matter how much faster, harder braking, better turning, more comfortable, etc that you make a bike, there is likely another bike out there that does the same thing, better, right off the showroom floor.
So let me get this straight. You're saying that a reduction in weight is NOT measurably better? There are few things on this planet that are more easily measured than weight, so what exactly would be measurably better if that's not?
But I digress... thank you for being so willing to dictate how others spend their time and money, and for determining the value of our effort. We sure couldn't have done it without you
(Some people actually have disposable income, spare time, and a level of enjoyment that is derived from working on a motorcycle; doesn't sound like you fall into any of those.)

I know across the river from where I live, departments in the Cincinnati area routinely right tickets for loud pipes to both sportbikes and cruisers. It's actually been a good tool in their fight against the Iron Horseman and Highwaymen. They pull them over for the loud pipes then find other things to arrest them for.

That's cool, how can I get into the polled over thing?
I see it working like the cop pulls up next to you and brings out the questionnaire. First question, would you like to be pulled over now? First answer, now's not a good time..., maybe later...

Simply, loud pipes piss me off. I hate getting stereotyped as inconsiderate because I ride a motorcycle.
There are many ways people can choose to be pissed off at motorcyclists;
- They can be louder than a car
- They can be ridden more aggressively than a car (all you stealth guys riding fast can hurt the motorcycling image too)
- They can represent more freedom/less conformity than most people choose to embrace
- They can maneuver through traffic and park more easily than cars
- They can be more efficient than cars
My point is that some people will choose to not like motorcycles - some because of how we behave and others because of what we represent.
Do loud pipes create a focal point for restricting our "rights"? Sure, and so does riding like a knob on public streets.
Does it make sense to limit the focal points that provide avenues to limit motorcyclist's rights? Sure, right up to the point where we're not going to be liked no matter how we behave.
Should anyone operating a car pay full attention to driving? Absolutely, but no one is working on getting rid of them because drivers are doing everything BUT driving nowdays.
The world is not perfect and while this is not a police state yet it is getting closer all the time, so I am going to enjoy my interests as long as I can while also being mindful of those around me.
Will some driver occasionally think my bike is too loud, or I am riding too fast? No doubt.
Am I going to crawl under a rock least I possibly offend someone? Not gonna happen.
You want to have a discussion about someting with me, even agree to disagree about something, great, I love good dialogue and new perspectives.
You want to tell me what to do, preach some absolute "it's either this or that" BS? I ain't buying and you can go hump yourself.
Moderation is a wonderful thing.

BTW - I added this topic as a poll.
So far the results are dead even - half stock and half modified exhausts....but no "open" pipes!

I would guess you would need an HD forum to get open pipe responses.
As to the original question about D&D pipes on an FJR, if they are as loud as all the other D&D pipes I have had the misfortune to hear, I could not imagine it being any use as a ST mount with said pipes installed. Ride in/on any vehicle with loud pipes for any length of time and you realize just how annoying and tiring it is.
This does not mean better lighter/louder pipes can't be an option, they can. It is the sound level that is at issue. I, for one, would like to see the SAE J2825 sound test adopted by all states. What this would do is provided aftermarket exhaust manufacturers with a standard to work with (good for us), provide an easy way to test compliance (also good) and with any luck it will reduce the use of overly loud pipes (really good for motorcycling as a whole).
Teh sound levels allowed by the J2825 standard are actually fairly loud, but still reasonable. It will allow noise levels of up to 100db. The current EPA mandate is 80 something db.

I'd say no to D&D for the same reason as most others. They make the most obnoxious pipes going in my experience.
I'd say yes to aftermarket pipes if you want them. It's your money and your bike. (The judgemental fascists should fuck off and die IMO.) Even if you want to be an obnoxious ass.
I have a Yosh RS1 a lot quieter than the RS3 at Idle and up to about 5000 RPM. About the same as many of the exhausts witha DB killer. Lighter and looks better than a stock Bandit exhaust. something like that might be a better option.
The SAE J2825 test has been adopted here by a couple of towns and is causing great angst both because of the test and because of the severe penalites proposed. But mostly because "Loud Pipes save lives" LOL
I do think standards would be a great idea i don't know yet if J2825 is the right one.

How, um, judgemental of you.
I actually agree with much of the rest of your message. There's nothing wrong with aftermarket pipes per se, if you don't mind spending extra money to replace parts that work perfectly well with parts that may not work as well.
On the plus side, they're often lighter than stock. Sometimes they may make room for a bike to have larger luggage. They're especially useful once the OEM pipes are no longer available. (That's why there are aftermarket pipes on my '74. In fact, those are quieter than stock, if anything).
The problem is LOUD PIPES.

First off, lets be clear that the test and any penalties are completely separate. The test is simply a standard to measure against. The penalties are political.
That said, I think the J2825 test is a good one. The sound limits it sets are quite higher than allowed from a stock exhaust system, 92db VS 80bd at idle and up to 100bd (3&4 cyl bikes) at 5K. 100 db is actually quite loud. Osha recommends hearing protection if exposed to 100bd for more than 2 hours a day.
Just to clarify, I am not against aftermarket exhaust systems. What I am against and what harms the perception of our chosen sport / past time / hobby / way of life are the idiots out there running pipes that should only be run on a closed course; not on public streets where the sound is a hazard to others. When I can hear a bike 1/2 a mile away, fine; when the bike 1/2 a mile away is loud enough to interrupt conversation, that is a different thing.

The problem is largely people with louder than stock pipes that feel they need to rev to redline everytime they accelerate from a stop.

The Sharonville police seem to be the most aggressive, then Cincinnati itself.
I don't mind. I have stock pipes but I've been riding with others and we've been stopped because of their pipes.

Ok so far we're pretty much in agreement that I'm going to be an obnoxious fatass who's out destroy motorcycling and make babies cry!..............lol............
I still don't see a lot of folks personally getting tickets tho............
I WILL BE AVOIDING CINCINATTI AT ALL COSTS!.........lol............not hard since I'm in SoCal........
I think they make some universal baffles that will cut the noise on demand, might be in the market for that, since changing back and forth with the stock pipes would be a bit laborious............

I once got a fix it ticket for a loud pipe.
It was 1991 and I was riding a $600 GPZ 550. The PO had painted "WolfDog" on the gas tank (I kid you not) which I was able to remove. But he had also put a hole on the inside/swing arm side of the muffler body of the Yoshi pipe to let some more of that sweet music out.
As I was broke, I did not fix it. The moto cop who pulled me over outside USC in LA asked for my papers, and when he couldn't find anything wrong with them, walked around my bike, asked me to start it and rev it, then wrote me the ticket.
Nice guy.
