What to do with old flatscreen monitors?
«

We got these monitors back in 2006. Can't say they had "non-stop" use, but used every workday, and while powered down via energy saving features, they were never turned "off" or unplugged.
About a year or so ago, both had their on board sound crap out. Got some speakers for my desk. A few months back, a bit of "flicker" started to appear. Not a loss of light, but a seeming interference with signal. This week, both basically would show a crappy image for a second or to then go back into standby mode.
New ones are in place, but is there any salvage value to the old ones? Best way to dispose of them? I honestly expected the back lights to burn out first, but it seems the electronics (chips) went buggers instead.

Best Buy and other places will take them in for recycling so they don't end up in the land fill.

Take them apart. Remove the Fresnel lens and use them to pop popcorn using solar energy.

Will they pay me to recycle? I know they'll be selling what I give them.

Have it your way. I seriously doubt Best Buy or any others actually profit from their program. I think they do it because it's the right thing to do. But sure, go ahead and throw stuff in the trash without a thought of where it ends up. That's your prerogative.

Good for them. That's what capitalism is all about.

My local municipality has a recycling program.
Bring the electronics to the waste transfer station, and they have a SeaCan that they put all the used/non-working electronics in for recycling.
Call your town or city hall and ask. They'll know.

I figured we'd be holding onto these until the next "free day" for dumping them for recycling. I was just wondering if there was anything worth salvaging from them (other than keeping the cables and power cords).

There's a lot of weird and nasty chemicals and minerals in most electronics, mercury being a common one.

At night, dig a pit in your neighbors backyard right next to the one where you dump your used motor oil. Dump them in. Bury. Done.

A guy in Memphis had a bunch of them placed in his front yard, some on the ground and some in trees, looking out at passing traffic....
