He figured it out!  A hand start, just like on the old timey cars.

So I was perusing old motorcycle pictures on the inetrwebs and came across ("acrost" if yer from the hills) this and was trying to figure out what the heck it is. I'm talking about the tall middle footpeg looking thingy. I've narrowed it down to 6 possible things:
1. Highway peg for the passenger. So's yer lady can stretch out on those long rides.
2. A calf exerciser/massager. It looks like the top rubber part pivots out and Triumphs vibrate correctly so maybe it's used to stimulate/massage the calf? Maybe? No?....
3. A poorly placed heel/toe shifter. This seems to be the most logical answer except the placement is a bit odd. Maybe calf/toe shifter?
4. A stunt peg. You know, for when you want to transition from a seated position to the standing on the seat position for impressin' the ladies.
5. Part of a tool kit. The rubber hammer part of every tool kit. Ya know, for pounding loose parts back into place that have vibrated..... well, loose.
6. Unknown doo-hicky. The unexplained, if you will.

Good God you must be young, its a kick starter, all older British bikes had the shift on the right side, rear brake on the left. Or perhaps if you don't believe me picture "ejection release lever"

As much as the romantic in me would love a '67 Triumph sitting in the collection, the thought of the RHS shifter is scary.

I have a RHD car, but the pedals are all organized in the same order, so there's no re-learning to do in driving the car.  Just makes left-hand turns at intersections a little funny with the less-than optimal view at times.

I have borrowed a friend's 60s Triumph for a short ride, and had to continually keep the shifter/brake location fresh in my mind, and ooopsed more than once on a simple few-miles drive.

As much as the romantic in me would love a '67 Triumph sitting in the collection, the thought of the RHS shifter is scary.

My first bike had a right side one up three down gear change, my second bike was left side one down four up. The switch wasn't that big a deal as I remember.

Both those bikes had something similar to the object in question here. On the first bike it was definitely a security device, designed to cause injury to anyone trying to start the thing - owner included.

Good tries one and all. What you are observing is the British beta mechanical version of the Vibe Rider for Couples Side Car racing. Classic Wooden Clothes Pins for nipple clamps were an available option. Not surprising you all missed this bit of obscure British Motorcycle Racing trivia. American's are so ethnocentric.
