the above opinion is simply that of an average middle aged hick with one too many brain injuries... or, don't take it too serious.

Jeep Wrangler.... Yes it has the highest resale value.  Take that.

I have a 99 TJ wrangler.  Love driving it when I want to.  Would I want to commute in it. NO.

Doors off, top off.  By far one of the funest vehicles I have owned over the years.  Is it loud, YES, must turn up stereo all the way to hear it at hwy speeds.  Who needs a radio anyways.  Is it dam fun to urban off road Yes, run stuff over, climb curbs, cut through grass, climb snow piles, etc.

Then there is the real reason to own one.  Using the 10,000 pound winch to make a table so that you can cook Bacon while camping.

Bought one!

OK, conditionnally: it will pass a safety check and I still need to see the Used Vehicle Information Package, which will tell me it has no liens and that the seller is actually the second owner.

Y2K TJ, 4.0, 5-speed, red, 144k km, not a speck of rust -- which over here is a huge factor, you wouldn't believe the number of rust buckets/basket cases that are for sale. Dana 44 in the back, 35 in the front, 31" BF Goodrich in good shape on the original 15" rims. (The spare is still the stock one, at I believe 30". Let's hope I don't need it.

After a test drive, the PO put it up on his Hydra Lift -- yeah, he has one of those in his garage -- and I had a good look underneath with a trouble light. Man, does a yearly rustproofing application make a difference...

Now, I need to figure out how to get the hard top in the back yard. Damm gate is 36" wide. And figure out how to install a soft top.

Good for you.  You will like the 5 speed manual.  I had one after driving one of the auto trans TJs at work (auto = heavy garbage).

Don't ruin it will a big lift and huge tires.

:chuckle: I'm heading out as soon as I pack for 1000 miles of eastbound driving in mine this weekend - CO > IL for a week then a two day return next weekend. `wish I could spend the time on mountain trails but it'll be a nice trip anyway.

Enjoy your new ride. If you can skip the soft top for a bit, stick on a bikini top (and no doors) until the rain comes!

That's like buying a ZX-14 and running it on touring radials.  Lol

I'm a bit late to the party. I've got a '97 TJ with the 2.5 engine and 5 speed tranny. All the bad things that people have said are mostly true; slow (especially so w/ the 4 banger), loud, thirsty, bad handling, etc.

Reliability has been good for me. Got 190,000 miles on the clock and it still starts first time, every time, no matter how many weeks it's been sitting idle. It's the easiest car on the world to wrench on and parts are very cheap. I would recommend one to anyone who wants to learn to wrench on their own cars.

I do use mine mostly off-road. but I haven't gone crazy; just a 2.5" lift and 31" tires. Enough to get the job done off-road with out killing the road manners and MPG, most importantly....not killing my rear D35..!!

They are kinda unique. Not that practical, but they sure are a ton of fun. My wife and I both have higher-mileage cars, and the Jeep makes a perfect 3 back-up vehicle that can be driven when one of the other 2 is down for maintenance / repair.

I have found the Jeep crowd (especially the off-road crowd) to be down to earth and extremely friendly.
