I'm fairly new to the BMW thing and was just wondering how BMW reacts to owners and/or outside shops doing service & such on our bikes.

Have not actually heard anything one way or another, but, does BMW push back or try to deny any warranty issues if work is not done by a shop at a BMW dealer??  Or can one trust the warranty if all is documented properly and reciepts kept??

My local dealer just isn't so conveniently located and is typically quite busy and spur of the moment needs are tough to get done quickly....... so, the simpler stuff will do myself and use a good local shop for all else.

Well, anyway,  just doing a quick sanity check before proceeding.

I heard BMW's are the most reliable bikes out there.  Why would you even need a warranty?   Bigsmile

Just document your services and you should be fine.  The Magnusen-Moss Act should protect you if push comes to shove.

Perfect!!    Just what I needed to hear.....thanks.

First I've heard of M-M Act, but, Googled just now and found a piece on it in SPORT RIDER site.......

"
Magnuson-Moss prohibits something called tie-in coverage--this means that a company cannot make warranty coverage contingent on, say, dealer service only or the use of a specific oil brand. If you're told that if you don't take your bike in for the initial (usually 600-mile) service your warranty will be void, you've just heard a load of B.S. Still, someone is expected to perform the tasks set for the initial service, but it can be you or your mechanic buddy--just be sure you guys know what you're doing. The manufacturer usually can't be held responsible for negligence on your part.

from what ozzie's in chico says, documentation is key.
i was impressed with their service for my 600 mile check and oil change on my '11 f800r - they actually checked the torque on a number of items, including the center stand i'd bought from them.  the centerstand passed, but some footpeg bolt did not ...

i bought a filter from them and did my own 3k miles oil change, making sure to keep the receipts and make the entry.

not sure about who'll be doing the 6k mile service, which i seem to be quickly approaching, after my 900 mile thursday ride,
