Father's day gift for 71 year old - non rider
«

Stumped this year. He's 71, handy, takes care of his house, plays golf, likes practical gifts. I'm ok with gift certificates and all, but I like the actual gift to be something he'll keep.
He's also about to go on a 2+ week cruise to Alaska with my mom. Maybe something for the trip?
Any thoughts?Seriously, I'm stumped.

That's pretty much my pops to a tee. Me and my brother are stumped every year because if the guy needs or wants something he buys it. One year we bought him a new grill because his was getting a little long in the tooth. That's the only year we had an easy time figuring out a Fathers Day gift for the guy. Sorry I can't help ya here but at least know that there's someone else in the boat with ya

Nice set of binoculars for the trip or even a spotting scope on a tripod.

He's active-practical- going to alaska--plays golf...
Get him a nice lightweight Gore-tex shell jacket like an Arc'teryx or something similarly good, Northface Mountain Light.....
I have a NFML that goes where I go when the weather cools down. I'll even pack it on a summer camping trip if it gets funky cool out at night.
It's damn near 10 years old but is still in VGC with some pretty heavy use.
Deal on them here! This is dirt cheap.

Does he have a decent digital camera? If yes, does it have a high capacity SD card?
I'd like to second the idea of binoculars...and the
windbreaker
light jacket as so eloquently described in ConPilot1's post, too!
This isn't tangible, but maybe pay for an excursion for their cruise to help them make some additional memories?
My brother always gives my dad "a day" each year where they'll play a round of golf in the morning, have a nice lunch at the clubhouse, then head off to the cigar shop for a beverage or two and a smoke. He'll pick up a few extra cigars to send home with my dad. Again...not necessarily tangible, but they sure do look forward to and enjoy that father/son day each year!

He already bought a bad ass jacket, and has a decent camera with a big memory card. Of the EOE's can't come up with anything better, I'm going with either a spotting scope and some decent binoculars, or just some decent binoculars. Looks like a $20 scope at Dick's sporting goods by my house - we'll see what they have in stock.
Other suggestions welcome!

No. You called an Arc'teryx jacket a windbreaker.
That's like calling your C14 a scooter.

Buy a very fine bottle of scotch and help him drink a few shots of it.

If you get him binoculars, get him Roger Tory Peterson's Guide to Western Birds (if he's into that). Cribbage board if he plays... 2+ week cruise, eh? He might go stir-crazy - does he like to read?
Biodegradable golf balls
so he can tee off the stern?
Is this a big ship cruise or a small ship cruise? My 87 yo mom has done them all. If they will be out in a Zodiac, some wellies are very nice. Nothing worse than cold, wet feet. Will they be doing any hiking? A walking stick is very useful.

One year I went to a local meat market and got my dad a cooler and filled it with some very nice cuts of beef and pork gormet sausages, etc. Stuff he most likely might not buy that often for himself. Not that good for the arteries, but he seemed pretty pleased with it.
