I checked out the S1000RR at the Indy GP last year and my first thought was: this thing is only a set of bar risers away from being a pretty darn comfy ride. The ergos really were quite accommodating for my long legged self ( I'm about 6'0/185lb w/ a 33" inseam BTW) except for the forward lean being a bit much for serious miles.I'd tour on one.
Heck, I'd put a 1000 or 2 on it over a weekend as-is.

Our own Miles has done quite a bit of riding on his highly mod'd S1000RR, including a SS1000 and other such fun stuff.

I've done a fair number of 12+ hour days on mine, including an SS1K (1260 miles) a month ago.
My touring mods? A new top triple clamp that allows 5mm higher bars, a plug for an e-vest and heated grips. Also, an outlet for USB so I can charge my phone wile riding and a double bubble windscreen.
Other than that, it's stock. Well, except for the built AMA super bike motor, Yosh super bike race exhaust and BST carbon wheels...

Does it finally feel fast with the race exhaust? I rode a stock one and was pretty underwhelmed by the acceleration.

I'm not sure it's the exhaust that makes it feel fast. I suspect it's more a matter of the 206 rwhp that does it. The exhaust sure does make it sound fast, and though.

Meh
. Good. Honda did it with the CBR F4 and Kawasaki renamed the ZX6R as the ZZR (on two different models). Both were racing bikes "transformed" into sport touring bikes with no significant changes. Hopefully with this S1000, the trend towards hyper aggressive riding positions on sportbikes will reverse a little bit.

Problem is your bike only feels fast once you exceed 180mph.

He meant that the "comfy" sportbike has been done many times before. The current CBR's for example....especially the CBR 600RR. This bike has bars mounted ABOVE the triple clamp. That may not sound like a big deal but it is. The KTM RC8 also has adjustable ergos.

Wow!
Hope you have a radar detector in addition to the heated connections.

Stop. This. Right. Now. I saw one in the r/w/b color scheme and had similar thoughts of "saaaaay, that could make a dandy solo tourer."
Between that and the GSA, I'd have covered the Beemer extremes.

Surely it has hard case integrated luggage and a subframe that can support a nice 50 litre top case. Cuz, we all know, THAT'S what defines sport-TOURING.

The S1000R is a crazy sweet platform for an uber sports tourer.
I'm waiting for Honda to step up and build a competitor..
The current CBR is real nice, but it's as if time has stood still for Honda.
