What's the proper way to dispose of dirty, oily, greasy shop rags?

"Proper" is just not affordable.  According to various regulations they would need to be disposed as hazardous waste.  If anything they could possibly be turned in at the local/county haz waste collection site.  In the real world I think most people just send them to the landfill.

Just don't let them collect in a heap, or bucket, wadded up.  There have been occurrences of spontaneous combustion.

As far as I know, households are exempt from hazardous waste regs.  I chuck oily, greasy rags into the trash.   Bigsmile

haha  Well, oil and antifreeze aren't hazardous wastes, unless they are contaminated with a listed hazardous waste.  Polluting though, that's another story, that'll get the DEP and EPA after ya!   Wink

Yup. When I was wrenchin' on fighters for Unc' Sam in my prior life, we had to throw our rags into special metal cans w/ spring-loaded lids to contain any fire.  In my current life dealing with lawsuits and such, I've seen a few cases where contractors throw rags into plastic garbage bags, which later ignite and burn expensive shit down.

I work for a regional government and I deal with household hazardous waste as my job.  Oily, dirty rags are permitted to be thrown into the trash, but of course, every region will be different.

I worked 8 years for a large quantity generator of hazardous wastes, and yes, every state or region has different laws.  You'll probably go to jail in California if you threw an oily rag away!   Lol
