In about a month, Sandy and I will load up the Norge for a 10 day trip to Acadia NP and back to northern KY. Our plans are tentative and open to suggestion. Acadia is one of the few NP's we have never visited, so that is definitely on our list of destinations. Other stops on our list are places we have already seen, so we could replace them: finger lakes wineries near Ithaca, Adirondacks (Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake), White Mts. including the Kancamagus Highway. Though we like to visit wineries, we enjoy dropping in on friendly microbreweries even more. We also like to visit unusual MC shops/exhibits. We will not be camping on this trip, as we will have had our fill of camping by then; we will be camping in Oregon, Washington, & BC for a few weeks before this trip.

Any suggestions of routes or places to see?

Thanks,

Jon

Nothing better than greeting the new day from atop Mt. Washington....

Just make sure that you dress for the "local" weather...it could be 70 degress cooler on top than it is at the base.

If the weather doesn't cooperate on Mount Washington (nasty weather is possible in any season, and if it's bad, motorcycles aren't allowed) and you want  a slightly tamer alternative, there's Whiteface near Lake Placid. Crossing Vermont and New Hampshire at that latitude is always more enjoyable, I find, than further south, though there's no way to cross those two skinny states in as little time as you think.

Acadia's beautiful, but can be crowded on some summer weekends. If you can arrange to be there mid-week, all the better.

On the first part of your trip, generally following the Ohio River and sampling some of the great roads in Southeastern Ohio, if you haven't already done that too many times, is fun. Also depends on how many hours/miles/curves you want per day while two-up.

Two museums that could be part of your route are the Motorcyclepedia Museum (http://www.motorcyclepediamuseum.org) in Newburgh, NY (only open weekends) and the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum (http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org)at AMA headquarters in Pickerington, OH. The Cannonball Run 2012 starts at Motorcyclepedia on Sept. 7, if that fits into your timing.

Just came back from Acadia, below is my report. Bar Harbor is pretty nice town as well, a tad touristy but nice.

Definitely do the Auto Road up Mt Washington. Also, if you are in northern NH and looking for a great place to stay, see this place.

Owners Bill and Donna are wonderful.  Thumbsup

Also, hit up Epconde and his site, http://www.newenglandriders.org/. He did all the research for us. Thanks again, Ed!

I'm not familiar with where you are going, but I do have a question for you.  How do you keep your wife interested in riding pillion for lots of miles, days, years?  My wife was pretty gung-ho about it while we were dating several years ago to the tune of about 5000 to 7500 miles per year. She has since lost interest to the point I can hardly get her on the back of the bike for a 30-mile round trip for lunch or dinner once or twice a year.  We added an Auto-com system and that helped some but she still says it's just too boring.

Jon...

Just west of Ithaca, is Watkins Glen.....must stop and at least get a pic of the track

Just east of Ithaca, is Copperstown....Baseball Hall of Fame, Doubleday Field, and even more important....my birthplace .... Bigsmile.    seriously, though, it is a very cool resort type small town with plenty to see and do.  muesums, restaurants, shops, all on the lake.  If the weather didn't really suck in the winter I would have moved back years ago, just a really beautiful small town.  Close to Cooperstown, going toward Oneonta, is the Omegang Brewery. Belgium style beer and cheese brewed and made on an old farm.  Personally, I don't like that type of beer, but the brewery/farm is cool to see and they do have tours and sampling most days.  That whole area is a destination point for many travelers.

Enjoy the trip!

Patrick,

As we drive into Cooperstown will we see a sign that reads "Cooperstown, Birthplace of KYZREX"? Like you, I am not a big fan of Belgium style beers. However, Sandy is, and so we just might check out the brewery.

cruisin,

Motorcycling is the glue that brought us together and has kept us together. Sandy grew up in a family of MC racers; she used to ride her own bikes on these long trips. Now, it just seems easier to pack, fuel, maintain, etc.just one comfortable sport-touring bike. She seems content being a passenger as long as I keep it in the double digits.
