Ok so this is a bit of a rant. I just moved to Ft Collins in February from Orlando Fl. I have been riding motorcycles all over the south east for the last 10 years. I've any dozens of trips to the Deal's Gap area in North Carolina. I had a ticket here and there but Colorado Cops are relentless. I've had two tickets in the last 2 months both 53 in a 35. Both of the front range. I was on the peak to peak yesterday and saw 6 cops working it. This is particularly frustrating because the last one I got I was coasting down a hill. Is anyone successful with a radar detector? I'm seriously thinking about parking the FZ1 for the rest of the year and just riding my KTM in the woods.

Perhaps you should slow down a little when the limit drops that low.   Bigsmile

Sounds like CO is broke and they are just letting the uniformed tax man loose.

Here in VA the 35 limit is on the outskirts of towns and they enforce it seriously. Perhaps the setup in Colorado is similar.

I had been closely watching my speed the whole day they nailed me right where it drops from 45 to 35 coasting down the hill.

the above opinion is simply that of an average middle aged hick with one too many brain injuries... or, don't take it too serious.

The south end of the p2p in Gilpin county is heavily patrolled, as are the upper sections of the canyon roads down that way. Never had an issue on the northern end up until it meets RT 7. Then there are often statey's on that section by Estes Park. If you want to speed in CO, you need to get past the front range, or hit the more desolate un-patrolled roads. And anytime you are near a town in the foothills, keep it slow.

About 25 miles south of Pagosa Springs towards Chama on US 50. It doesn't get much more desolate than that.  Wink

The week and a half I spent riding riding all around CO I don't remember seeing a single speed trap.....  And with MA plates I was certainly a big target, I wouldn't fly back to fight a ticket.

Edit for spelling

Yeah, I know exactly where that picture is. I think I'd have been tempted to use the "well, he never came up behind me with his lights on" strategy  Lol.

I've only been to CO a couple times, so keep that in mind.

While there, I was astounded at how low the speed limits where.

If a particular curve in Colorado with a statutory (white/black) sign of 35 mph ...
- would be 55 mph in most western states with a yellow 35 mph sign
- would be 45 in the midwest with a yellow 35 mph sign
- would be 65 mph in California with 45 mph sign

Plus the pavement is kind of crappy throughout the state. For my money, Colorado is a place for sightseeing, not sport-riding.

53 in a 35....i can see why they pulled you over, they would pull a cage over for the same speeds.

Eventually your CopDar will kick in and you will learn where cop often locate themselves in the mountains.

Any time you enter a city limits in the hills make sure you are going below the speed limit.

"coasting"? you mean like, "clutch in and coasting" or just "rolling off the throttle as i come down from warp speed"?

yeah, P2P always has some LEO presence. Rollinsville, and the intersection with Golden Gate Canyon are popular spots.

some areas can be rough- you cam get local townies, county mounties and CSP all fighing with each other to see who can lighten your wallet first.

It doesn't help that our limits are painfully low. At least 10 below what's safe.

If you think the paving is crappy here then don't even think about riding in the Texas Hill Country, the roads here are glass smooth compared to the chip seal cheese graters that make up most of the roads there now. When I moved to that area 10 years ago they had some pretty good roads but in the time since I guess a lot of Texas County Commissioners brother-in-laws needed contracts.

The good roads with very little LEO activity are on the western slope. From I-70 south. But then doing 20 over will get you busted just about anywhere.

I've had two tickets in the last 2 months both 53 in a 35.

That's 18 MPH over the speed limit, so I don't see a problem.

just came back from a long weekend on western slope (Paonia area). only LEO presence i saw was a couple coming over Trail Ridge today on return, and 3 CSP in a span of 2 miles on 82, between Carbondale and GSprings. 2 were trolling, one had already set the hook and had landed his catch.
i was never more than hrmmph hrrmmph hrrmmmppphh over the limit. promise. Wink
