cultureslayer: You've probably seen my posts before about how much I hate my department. They've tried to kick me out because I was sick, generally made me miserable, lied to be, and refused to help me pay for research supplies. When one of the professors in the department stole a physical model out of my lab, they wouldn't make him give it back and I couldn't deal with the drama so I had to start over again on a new project. It's been miserable. Today is the icing on the cake. After all their bitching about not having any money to help me pay for research supplies, I get this email today telling me they have hired a marketing consultant! they want everyone to send her feel good stories so they can try to attract MORE grad student to this shithole. WTF?! Why not spend your money fixing your problems and taking care of your current students instead of hiding your problems and replacing the students? "Hi BME faculty, staff, students, and post-docs. By way of this email I'm introducing you to Sarah C..., who has just been hired to help BME's marketing efforts over the summer. She will be making brochures to send to other institutions, posters to display at BMES, and otherwise helping with our publicity. What she needs from YOU is paragraphs of text describing your most exciting work - stuff that you want other people to hear about and would interest someone in checking out or donating money to our grad program. We're also looking for photos of people and projects, and cool images. Any text that you send needs to be interesting but also somewhat lay-language, so that undergraduates could read it and be interested but not overwhelmed. Make it understandable to everyone. PLEASE SEND SARAH MATERIAL at (email removed) which she can start sorting through and using in dept marketing efforts. Since she is not familiar with labs, make sure that if you are a student or a post doc, you include the name of your PI as well. Thanks! -Paul" |

cultureslayer: Also, when I posted this on facebook the first reply was that asshole shah asking "marketing consultant? Is she cute?" |

ConPilot1: So I take it that you're not going to cooperate with this team effort in steering Sarah, the free no-salary marketing intern in the right direction for the overall good of your organization and make Sarah's immediate superior an extra 20% bonus this year for the cost cutting efforts with zero negative impact on the marketing program?? |

Mr. Whippy: My advice: Keep your head down, get your work done, get your degree and get the F' outta Dodge. They can still hurt you for years after you leave, so don't give them ammo. If anyone asks if you sent her a paragraph, murmur something about you'll have to go through your spam filters, maybe the email got trapped there. |

That's my plan. :( I never want to set foot in academia again, although if I do have extra cash after I graduate I would like to give it to lawyers capable of destroying the department. Some days that's all I can come up with that keeps me going. |
