It's not really all that odd. It's happened a few times: usually with a long distance purchase. Someone who has the ability, time and desire to do that kind of ride matched with someone who needs a bike to be somewhere else and has the money, trust and patience. Good match up if the stars align just right.
In dog world, its fairly common for people to volunteer to do some incredibly selfless acts of service (days of shuttle service driving) to get an adopted dog to it's new forever home. They get nothing for it except the satisfaction of giving a needy pup a new start.
Similar concept with perhaps a touch more selfishness on the part of the volunteers here.

Not sure I'd volunteer to do the same for an old, uninteresting bike.
