Hello newb here with a wonderful story to tell and in need of some guidance.

On Thursday July 26 I purchased my first motorcycle. It was love at first sight, a Mandarin yellow and gray 2004 BMW R1100S (ABS) Inlove. Came with hard bags, tank bag, and to my later astonishment it had a throttlemeister on it (didn't get used yet due to me not having been on motorized two wheels in near a decade). Then tragedy struck  Sad , On Monday July 30 while on an interstate stopped in traffic I was rear ended by a woman on her cell phone  Mad2 , who I'm still waiting to figure out if she actually had insurance (really long story cut out)  firedevil . But mechanics prognosis of the bike: totaled , may she rest in peace. Quote without labor $11,000 in parts, bike worth $6,400. Fortunately for me I walked away with only a scratch.

So I'm now out for more information about sport tourers since I loved my BMW but the silver lining is that I may have been saved from costly future repairs. Suggestions on bikes about the same price range and style would be immensely helpful. Thanks in advance.

There's got to be another R1100S out there somewhere. If you liked it (and who wouldn't, the R259 motor is top notch), find another one.

Trust me I'd love to get another R1100S, once this whole insurance matter clears up, but I'm now looking for something that will be a little friendlier to my wallet when eventual repairs come up, but is still relatively close to the BMWers power and feel. I've heard mixed opinions on Triumph Sprints and I don't know any Japanese bikes that fit in this category, help?

Had a bandit 1200, wrecked it and bought an 01 FZ1 love both bikes the FZ1 is much more SPORT-touring where the bandit is more sport-TOURING. FZ1 more HP bandit more torque.

2nd generation FJR1300.  Not expensive to maintain, handles reasonably well when suspension is properly adjusted, more than fast enough if you enjoy the speed, runs on Regular.

Lots of CBR1100XXs for sale with low milage. One of Honda's best bikes. Bullet proof engine, in-line 4 easy to work on, unlike the Viffer. Lots of parts and after market. Great for commuting,  touring, two-up touring, canyon carving, great Bird community, dot com & dot org, in the USA. I just passed 192,000 kms and I only ride 6 months or so a year. You even have a choice of carbs or FI out there for sale. Mr Honded fecked up with the new VFR, imo and those of thousands of Bird owners world wide. Sport touring is not dead!

You don't give any information about your riding history...riding style...body size / shape...etc.  All would be helpful in considering / proposing options.  Are you riding 1 up exclusively...or is pillion room / comfort a consideration?

Want low / no maintenance?  Honda / Yamaha / Kawi / Suzuki are all great options.  Shaft Drive?  ST1300 is smooth, powerful, quiet, and needs nothing but fuel, oil changes, and periodic tire changes.  FJR's are popular, as are the Sprint offerings.

Want a sportier riding position?  SV's, Blackbirds, Speed Triples, VFR's, R1's etc are all great options.

Tell us more about who you are, and how you roll...
