Alright so Im checking out this 2000 Ducati ST2 on craigslist and I would like some professional opinions about the bike, I want to know if you guys think its a good buy for a first bike. And I know that alot of you will say thats too big for a first bike, but I have been riding motorcycles my whole life this will just be my first street legal one.

Thanks

What do you want to hear?  Oh, yea, you will be fine on it.  Just buy it and you will grow into it.  Bah!  STRAIGHT OUT - WRONG BIKE.

I actually love it when guys buy bikes that they aren't ready for.  This provides an extremely low mile, sometimes scratched up but otherwise mechanically sound garage queen for me to buy used.

Why do I cringe whenever I read that someone is looking for "expert advice" or a "professional opinion" on the internet?    Smile

My non-expert, not-even-close-to-professional OPINION:  Too much bike and too costly to maintain for a first bike for someone with apparently limited street experience.

Sounds like you've been riding dirtbikes you're whole life; not the same thing. Dirt riding can be an asset or a liability depending on how open minded you are. Dirt riding will teach you the basics but the street is a WHOLE different ballgame and requires a whole different skillset. If you can forget eerything you "know" about handing a bike you'll be 2 steps ahead of most newbies. Also, there's typically not 100's of 6000lb vehicles trying to kill you on a daily basis as the driver is glued to their cell phone when you're in the dirt. Adding the steep learning curve of a sport(y) bike is unwise at best.

As far as the bike in question, not the worst choice in the world (a liter SS takes that prize) but certainly not a good choice either. Of course, you're proably just looking for someone to validate the decision that you've already made: that the Duc will be a fine choice as long as you "respect the bike" or some other such nonsense. I won't be the one to validate you, sorry. For a first streetbike there are FAR better choices.
