Sounds like you've been riding
dirtbikes you're whole life; not the same thing. Dirt riding can be an asset or a liability depending on how open minded you are. Dirt riding will teach you the basics but the street is a WHOLE different ballgame and requires a whole different skillset. If you can forget eerything you "know" about handing a bike you'll be 2 steps ahead of most newbies. Also, there's typically not 100's of 6000lb vehicles trying to kill you on a daily basis as the driver is glued to their cell phone when you're in the dirt. Adding the steep learning curve of a sport(y) bike is unwise at best.
As far as the bike in question, not the worst choice in the world (a liter SS takes that prize) but certainly not a good choice either. Of course, you're proably just looking for someone to validate the decision that you've already made: that the Duc will be a fine choice as long as you "respect the bike" or some other such nonsense. I won't be the one to validate you, sorry. For a first streetbike there are FAR better choices.
