First time poster long time lurker......HI!

For a first time SS1000 is it considered a better idea to do the ride as a loop or point to point? I have done some long-ish rides and think I would like to give a SS1000 a try. I rode up to Portland from Prescott Valley Az last year and also rode from Santa Barbara to home in one day.

I will be riding my '82 GL1100 (cuz it's paid for).

Depends on how much time you have.  If you've got a couple of days to ride home, a point to point is fine.  We only had a day, so it had to be a loop.

Starting in Prescott, you should have plenty of riding options out towards NM or UT without jumping on interstate.

Good luck!

It does not make much difference, choose what works for you. if you do a loop, you just have to pay better attention to getting receipts at the "corners" of your loop.

Yup what they said- depends in time available.

However, I usually like loops.

Something about rounding a last corner and heading for home can make the last 350 miles sooo much easier knowing the next day can be a rest day.

I've never done a loop before so I can't comment about any pros for it. Mine've always been point to point. But like what's already been pointed out; if you have extra time a point to point will get you farther away from home.

There's also the "out and back." Simple: Ride 500+ miles out, take a break, get receipt and turn around.

I was kinda thinking about a "out and back" to New Mexico........but then I got to thinking about riding into the sun headed east and again west when I would be on the way home. Is this a very big deal or only a slight bother?

I looked into going west but I run out of land before I go 500 miles

It depends on the person - It really bothers some folks, me, not so much. If riding into the sun typically bothers you, than I'd say to avoid it.

Also depends on the time you set out. Only riding into the sun if you start in the morning. If you start east in the evening and ride through the night, it's behind you then.

Sorry, I couldn't do a majority of the ride at night. The headlight only provides a soft glow at best  Bigsmile. My thought was to start the time at 0400 and finish at about 2100. That way all of my 'darktime' is on familiar roads.

Tires, Speedometer cable and enough money for some gas and I'll be ready to go!
