I had the cover on the beveled gear pop off and pump all the oil out of the motor going down the road.  It trashed the motor.  Long story short, Kawasaki fixed it under warranty.  The bike has almost 60,000 miles on it.

This is why I love and buy Kawasaki.  The cost was over 4,000 dollars.

How did you not notice the cover was missing?
Was there no warning of low oil pressure?

I've heard of destruction testing of engines that
have run for hours after all the oil has been drained.

I was running about 85 down the freeway, and the oil was pumping out onto my waterproof, windproof bla bla bla riding pants.  Going 85 in traffic on the freeway, I tend to pay attention to the road, not the dash.  Anyways, I move my foot on the peg and it is slippery, move my leg to take look, and it is shooting oil 6 feet out the side of the bike.

Wow, I hope that's a freak occurrence for C-14s.

I had something similar happen to one of my cars.
The oil pressure sender snapped off at the threads
allowing oil to evacuate at high pressure.
Of course it only lost oil while running and wasn't
immediately  apparent as it didn't leak when parked.

So did they replace the entire engine or rebuild it?

My buddy had his zx-12r crank bearings pile up just past the one year warranty, like a month.

Kawi paid for the parts, he paid the dealer labour.

Not bad for being outside warranty.

They rebuilt the motor.  It was just a freak thing.  This is the only time they have saw it happen.

Hopefully it is solid now. My friends 12R runs well enough, as in smooth with good power, but it has always used oil in one cylinder since they "repaired" the engine. Adding oil routinely, one sparkplug (always #4) occasionally fouls with burnt oil, etc.

Pretty tough to go back on them now, as it's been almost 9 years since the fix.
