I'm not wild about tank bras.  I think that leaves either tank gripper thingies or some kind of 3M film.

What are good products to protect one's tank, specifically a 2001 VFR?

I had a tank bra on my Bandit for a while but thought it was ugly as feck and dust and dirt would get underneath it and scratch the tank. On my Sprint I used the film from Tankslapper and couldn't have been happier. Reasonably priced, durable, barely noticable, etc. The tank on your Viffer deserves to be seen, my friend  Thumbsup

I had the Tech Spec Snake Skin grip pads on my last bike - very nice.  They have ones for the sides and back of the tank.  http://www.techspec-usa.com/

I have a ProGrip resin tank protector that works great for protection from my jacket and tank bag.  It's not a knee grip, just a central protector.

Sorry, I assume that was implied.  Basically, from scratches.

I'm not sure if I want scratch-protection, grip enhancement, or nothing.

I tend to scratch/wear the paint on the sides of the tank from my knees and depending on the bike scratch the end of the tank with me berries and belt. Is that what you're trying to avoid, mm?

On the sides of the tank, I use cheapo 3M clear film (same as the "pre cut" kits, but I buy it by the roll and make my own).  On the top, it doesn't hold up as well so I went with the Resin stick-on thingy.

I vote for nothing.  Slap some wax on every now and then and call it a day.

What is this thing you call "wax"?  I've heard it used in relation to the theoretical concept of "washing your bike". Headscratch

Yes, exactamundo, my simian friend.

Yes, my VFR is from 2001, but it only has 4,000 miles and is in really good shape given its age and I'd like to keep it that way if possible without becoming extremely anal about daily washing, waxing and whatnot.

I do exactly the same thing. Works great.

Your tank will love you for it....

I went with the 3M film on my FJR, I did it myself (not the best job but it worked)
When I sold the bike I just pealed it off and it was back to the way I got it (read as: Not a Scratch)

I've got the Tech spec also (pebble finish) and like it alot. I used to have stomp grip clear pads, but they tended to slide and shift on hot days.

I have Black Stomp Grip on mine. I would have preferred the clear. I am using them not so much to avoid scratches. But to cover a bad scratch from the previous owner.
