Holy crap!  They sure updated - this CB1000, (3) new 500cc models including a "X" model, and a new Goldwing cruiser.

Here is the CB1000.  Looks like we may get an ABS option, too - http://powersports.honda.com/2013/cb1100.aspx

CB1000 will be $9,999, per MD.

http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2012/11/finally-coming-to-america-2013-honda-cb1100-priced-at-9999/

Also linked, MD's feature on the 500's -

http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2012/11/cbr500r-leads-charge-as-honda-announces-three-new-500s/

My favorite is the new CB500X.  Nice job, Honda.

But who's going to buy one? The naked market is all but non-existent here in the U.S. for non-cruiser bikes. Kawasaki tried this already and they sold like 10 of the things. Don't get me wrong, I think they will sell twice of many of these than they do of that GoldWing bagger. Which means 10 vs 5.

There were some spy shots circulating on the web and I figured the US would get maybe one variant but all 3 models........ never in a million years.   Makes sense, everyone has had to add 'value' to their products these days to get sales.   Those 500's are priced right and look great.

CB500F for $5,500.  Bigok  ABS for only 500 more.

I like the X better - not that I'll buy one - but still - what a lineup!  I'm wondering what the HP will be as compared to the 700X... and the PRICE.  It's 40 lbs lighter than the 700...

That 1100 looks pretty good too!  Can't say I'm looking for a naked bike though.  Especially with a 5-speed and less than 4 gallons in the tank...

At 3.9 gallons, it should get 150 miles out of a tank with no problem, more if you're easy on the throttle.

We got a comment on The Pace's blog indicating that fuel economy is in the 70 mpg range. If that's for real, 3.9 gallons is plenty.

210 miles before reserve!?  Heck yea, that'll work.

A 150 mile range is difficult sometimes in rural Appalachia.  A 210 mile range BEFORE reserves is excellent.

6 liters per 100 km = 39 mpg us

That's about a 150 mile range. According to this Aussie test:

Non-Euro markets supposedly get 54hp. The earlier 47hp figures match the new Euro tiered licensing. Regardless, it'll be plenty to hit the ton if you want to (specs out pretty much identical to my old GS500).

I guess your highway comment refers to the lack of fairing? The CBR500R is the faired model, an extra $500.

Yes, I was refering to the lack of wind/weather protection.  Highway = wind, and for me, commuting means dealing with variable weather.
The R comes with a fairing, but also clip-ons.  I think they're a pain in stop and go traffic (and I'm to old for that).

I'm pretty interested in the CB1100. Almost three years ago I contacted American Honda and was told that they did not intend to import it. Circumstances must have changed. I have to wonder if anyone younger than 40 will want one. Let's hope there are enough old codgers wanting to relive the 70s.

Although I really like my BMW, it may get traded for a CB1100.

The current full-feature Goldwing already competes with the K1600. The new one is an attempt to woo Victory/Harley buyers. I don't hate the red one. Just put the topcase back on. Bigsmile

 Headscratch

70mpg for the 500's maybe - certainly not for the 1100...

Yeah, we got some clarification on that. Apparently the site that reported that number also claimed that the 1100 is a thumper. Credibility gone.

The time for sporty 500's is here.  But that CB1100 will never sell in any great quantities.  For a couple of grand you can get a really decent 1981-82 CB900f which will do everything the CB1100 can.  I might have been interested if they had put some 17" wheels on it, with performance brakes.

Honda clearly knows they aren't gonna sell the CB1100 like it's 1969 all over again......the CB1100 is not a freshly minted new model, it has been around for a small bit, it just hasn't reached the U.S. until now.   I think it would make a great daily ride because it is just a nice simple motorcycle without all the drama queen hype of the latest and greatest go fast machine.   Those looking for that type of simplicity from Honda finally have a machine just for them.   Honda's other standard liter bike, the CB1000R is available for 2013 and covers the performance angle.

I've looked around at used cb750/900/1100F's from the 80's for years.   Lot of crap out there and frankly I'm over it.  I've seen to many crispy wiring harnesses, mice infested, rusted out 30+ year old pieces o'crap to last a life time.

I'm not in the market to buy a CB1100 but if they had brought the CB1300 over (which in my mind is more of a modern interpretation of the to old CB "f" series fours) I would be very tempted.

Is the Honda I used to love back??  Thumbsup

Seriously, they actually released some pretty cool stuff this year.

Somewhere, a couple years back, I'd read that the cool engineers that got transferred to the auto division years ago had been returned and to expect cool bikes again from Honda.

Maybe the rumours were true.

6 liters per 100 km = 39 mpg us

That's about a 150 mile range. According to this Aussie test:

http://www.mcnews.com.au/Testing/Honda/2010_CB1100/Review.htm

That's with an enthusiastic Aussie test rider aboard. He also reported never getting better than 185kM (115 mi) out of it before the red light came on. And what's with the 12K kM (7,500 mi) valve check? Shouldn't a bike like this be better served with hydraulic lifters?

I like the 500s. I might even look at one, but otherwise I think Honda is barking up the wrong marketing tree. Again.

I've looked around at used cb750/900/1100F's from the 80's for years.   Lot of crap out there and frankly I'm over it.  I've seen to many crispy wiring harnesses, mice infested, rusted out 30+ year old pieces o'crap to last a life time.

There are still quite a few CB900F's out there which are well maintained and in excellent condition.  You just have to look.  www.cb1100f.net is a site which will prove my words.

In regards to the CB1300.  If they bought that bike to Canada I would definately sell all my bikes and buy it.  A modern version of my CB900F which I have had for 25 years.

From my own personal experiance, the only people who really appreciate old motorcycles are the ones looking at them, and not having to tinker with them on a daily basis.

Sure that retro looking 1100 looks ok, but a liter bike brings twice the joy.

Honda managed to get the CBR500R, parallel twin budget bike to be the weapon of choice in the European Junior Cup — displacing the KTM 690 Duke.

Depends what you mean about tinker with them all day.  My 1982 Honda is stock with a pipe and jet kit.  I change the oil and filter every 2 k.  Check the valves every 6 k.  That's about it, apart from adjusting the chain infrequently.  Hardly a lot of maintenance.

A liter bikes brings twice the joy?  Sure it does, when I take my GSXR1000 to Deals Gap once a year.  The rest of the time it sits in my garage, waiting for the next trip.  Totally impractical as an everyday ride in a province where we have few twisty roads, and over zealous police operating radar.

I found a downloadable owners manual for the CB1100 and looked through it.

Valve inspection is every 8000 miles
The tank is 3.86 US gallons including the reserve
Front and rear suspensions have adjustable preload
Clutch and brake levers are adjustable for span
There is a helmet lock that uses the ignition key
That lock also pops the seat off
There is a tool kit under the seat
The battery is under the tool kit, under the front of the seat
The alternator output total is 336, so not many extra watts

Yikes - 8000 mile valve checks and a sub 4-gallon tank.   Thumbsdown

At least with a Monster, when you have similar short valve checks and fuel range, you get a bike weighing 170lb less than this retro Honda.  The Monster would probably get better fuel mileage, too.

I don't know about the current Monsters, but I had a Monster 1000 with the 992cc dual spark air cooled motor a few years ago and it pretty consistently returned 39 mpg. So at 100 miles I was looking for gas and at 140 miles it would have been empty. I never saw anything close to the upper 40s mpg on that bike, though a couple of trackdays saw low 20s mpg.  Smile

It was a nice bike and I liked it a lot. It was the first bike I ever did any touring on. The tiny gas tank and lack of a fuel gauge were really the only things that bothered me about traveling with it back then, though I don't think I'd chose one for that now.

I would agree with you on the liter bike. I do not ride in town anymore, I am getting old, so a liter bike means about a half hour of fun until I cramp up.  Lol

You are lucky in the fact that your Honda is reliable. My last museum piece was a 1982 VF 750 and well lets just say it let me down somewhat. Going further back I had a brief love affair with British bikes, and well lets just say that BSA convinced me to quit riding for a while when the push time climbed above seat time.  That bike gave me several hair line ankle fracture from trying to start it. (Mr. Lucas, is one cruel man). When I go to bike shows now and see all the old BSA's & Norton's there, the arthritis that has formed in my ankle thanks to hairline fractures reminds me to never, ever ride old again.  Wink

Are you blind or just obtuse?

You said new Honda's. That's possessive. New Honda's what? New Honda's bikes? Ok. That makes more sense. New Honda's offerings? Ok, good. Well, except for those both implying that Honda is new, rather than what Honda is releasing being new.

But new Honda's...? No, that's an incomplete sentence.

If you meant plural, it would be "new Hondas".

The one and only time you pluralize with an apostrophe is when pluralizing small letters. Like... "There are two e's in letters." A better way to say it is "There are two Es in letters." That removes the confusion, and the temptation to perpetuate bad habits.

So, I'm neither blind nor obtuse. I just have a solid understanding of my native language and I remember the things taught to me in grade school. I'm also very sick of hearing the stupid "yeah, but I knew what he was saying" excuse for poor grammar and usage.

I get that English - especially American English - has lots of weird rules, and many contradictions to those rules. Most of the other languages in the world have more and better structure. But hey, this is what we have, so let's just try to do the best with it that we can.

I don't ride 2-up much any more now that Liz rides her VFR and has the long-distance itch (and the bike to scratch it). My kids are getting old enough that if they want to ride, we can look at getting them licenses and bikes. My 10 year old will be fine on the SV. So yeah, I agree, I don't see much need for a big bike any more. When it's time to retire the SV, something like the new 500-X will definitely be on the short list.  Thumbsup

I belong to a motorcycle camping forum, and you would think that no one on the forum finished the 6th grade.  I don't think anyone over there has herd of spell check either. It's full of more than just typos, and the typical miss use of there, their and they're, or even, to, too, and two...

My local Honda shop has gotten one in, the non-ABS version.  The guy I know there said he was pretty impressed with the power and thinks it could handle semi-aggressive riding.  The open air channels in the top of the engine and simple air-cool design make it look like maintenance would be pretty straight forward.  The valve check period of 8k miles is not that long.  It's interesting that they had changed the timing of the intake on two cylinders to give it a less smooth ride.  The late Kevin Ash has a good write up on it.

I think it would make for a fun bike, maybe with lower bars for a modern cafe style.  It doesn't feel "overweight" at all when sitting on it.  I wasn't crazy about the over-abundance of chrome - like the entire front fender.  Having recently tested a Guzzi Griso, this Honda seems a natural competitor.  $9,999 is a really good price from Honda for this much bike.  3.9 gallons isn't much from the gas tank, but that's around what a Monster has available, too.  Availability of ABS is a plus.

Ok you are not blind because you did read the post.   You are obtuse because I didn't "say" anything as you assert.  I wrote my thoughts down like everyone else.   Now don't go trying the old "but I meant to say" routine.     That would be unbecoming of one so anal.

Thanks for the update Alex as I was impressed with the CB when I was at the motorcycle show in NYC. Now I am going to have to work in a test ride with my local dealer.  Thumbsup

Happened by a Honda dealer during a ride on Saturday and stopped to check out the new models.  They were sold out of the 500s, which my wife is interested in.

They did have a CB1100.  First time I saw one in person and thought it looked really nice with high quality finishes.  Seat is low and narrow and it felt much smaller and lighter than I expected it would.  The bars were on the high side, but that would be an easy fix.  Ground clearance looked adequate for my riding style most of the time.

It reminded me most of the Triumph Bonneville, though obviously more powerful with the larger engine (but less gap in power between the Honda and Bonnie than V7 and Bonnie, I believe).  I liked the ABS option, which this model had, and think the 1100 would likely make for a better 2-up riding experience.

I need to find a dealer that does test rides, or an event where one will be available to demo, though I don't see having two retro bike in CA, and don't want to sell the Moto Guzzi.

Tried one on a Honda Demo Day.
Kind of "meh".
As a second bike just to putter around, it would be great but not as my sole bike. Too "sanitized" for its own good.
Quite the looker though.
